Athletics At The 1956 Summer Olympics – Men's Long Jump
The men's long jump was an event at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. The qualifying stage and the final both were held on the second day of the track and field competition, on Saturday November 24, 1956. Thirty-two athletes from 21 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by 15 cm by Greg Bell of the United States, the nation's seventh consecutive and 12th overall victory in the event. Jorma Valkama's bronze medal was Finland's first medal in the men's long jump. Summary The number one qualifier was Henryk Grabowski, but he was unable to produce similar results in the final. The world record was not in the discussion, with world record holder Jesse Owens sitting in the stands more than 21 years after he had jumped 8.13m. Olympic Park Stadium (Melbourne)
Olympic Park Stadium was a multi-purpose outdoor stadium located on Olympic Boulevard in inner Melbourne, Australia. The stadium was built as an athletics training venue for the 1956 Olympics, a short distance from the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which served as the Olympic Stadium. Over the years it was the home of rugby league side, Melbourne Storm and the A-League team, Melbourne Victory; throughout its life the stadium played host to athletics. Olympic Park Stadium was located in Olympic Park, which is part of the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct. Olympic Park Stadium was demolished in 2012, and replaced with an Australian rules football ground. Igor Ter-Ovanesyan
Igor Aramovich Ter-Ovanesyan (, ; born 19 May 1938) is a Soviet and Ukrainian former long jumper and coach, of Armenian descent. Competing for the Soviet Union, he was a five-time European and two-time Olympic medalist in this event. In 1985, he was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour. Early life Ter-Ovanesyan was born in Kyiv to an Armenian discus thrower, Aram Avetisovich Ter-Ovanesyan, and a Ukrainian volleyball player, Valentina Ilinskaya. His parents met at the Kyiv State Institute of Physical Education, where they both taught sports-related topics. Career Ter-Ovanesyan took up athletics when he was 15, and within two years was included to the Soviet national team. Ter-Ovanesyan trained at Burevestnik, first in Kiev, later in Lviv, and then in Moscow. He holds a PhD and a title of Professor at the Department of Athletics, Moscow State Academy of Physical Culture. He published several sports-related books in Russian. Roy Cruttenden
Arthur Roy Cruttenden (18 February 1925 – 3 June 2019) was a British long jumper who competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Biography Born in Brighton, Cruttenden became an accomplished sprinter and quarter-miler before taking up long jump. World War II interrupted his career and he served in the Royal Engineers. Cruttenden finished second behind Harry Askew in the long jump event at the 1950 AAA Championships and then finished second again behind Sylvanus Williams at both the 1951 AAA Championships and 1952 AAA Championships. However, because he was the best placed British athlete he was considered the British long jump champion. Kenneth Stanley David Wilmshurst (9 April 1931 – 3 October 1992) was an Olympic athlete from England who competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Biography Born in Calcutta, West Bengal (India), he specialised in the long jump and triple jump events during his career. Wilmshurst became the British triple jump champion after winning the British AAA Championships title at the 1953 AAA Championships and successfully retained the title at the 1954 AAA Championships.
