The women's high jump event was part of the athletics programme at the 1948 Summer Olympics. The competition was held on 7 August 1948. The final was won by Alice Coachman of the United States who became the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal. The Helsinki Olympic Stadium (; ), located in the Töölö district about from the centre of the Finland, Finnish capital Helsinki, is the largest stadium in the country. List Of Olympic Records In Athletics
The modern Summer Olympic Games have been held every four years since the first Games in 1896 (except 1916 due to the First World War, 1940 and 1944 due to the Second World War, and 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic) and Olympic records are recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in each event. Anne-Marie Colchen
Anne-Marie Colchen-Maillet (8 December 1925 – 26 January 2017) was a French track and field athlete and women's basketball player. She became France's first high jump champion at the 1946 European Athletics Championships and held the French record for the event for ten years. She represented France in high jump at the 1948 Summer Olympics. In basketball she was the highest scorer at the 1953 FIBA World Championship for Women, helping France to third place. She was a member of the French national team for the European Women's Basketball Championship in 1950, 1952, 1954 and 1956. She was inducted into the French Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005. Shirley Gordon (athlete)
Shirley Gordon Olafsson (born Shirley Gordon; 10 April 1927 – 23 November 2019) was a Canadian athlete. She competed in the women's high jump at the 1948 Summer Olympics tying for 11th place. Gordon was born with a deformed left foot. She walked with a limp and used crutches until she was 13. Unable to compete in team sports, she taught herself the high jump. She joined a track club after a friend who was invited insisted that they admit Shirley as well. She married Herbert Olafsson, who was a member of the Canadian National Basketball team. Bernice Robinson (athlete)
Claudealia Bernice Robinson (February 28, 1927 – October 14, 2019) was an American hurdler. She competed in the women's 80 metres hurdles at the 1948 Summer Olympics. After the Olympics she moved to Cleveland. She continued to compete in Masters athletics under her married name of Bernice Robinson Holland as a thrower. Dora Gardner
Dora Kathleen Gardner (6 May 1912 – June 1994) was an English track and field athlete who competed for Great Britain in the 1948 Olympic Games. Biography She was born in Croydon, South London. Gardner finished second behind Dorothy Odam in the high jump event at the 1937 WAAA Championships and the 1938 WAAA Championships. At the 1938 British Empire Games, she won the silver medal for England in the high jump event. In the long jump competition she finished seventh. Also in the 1938 European Athletics Championships she finished fifth in the high jump contest and in the 1946 European Championships in Athletics she finished seventh in the high jump event. Bertha Crowther
Bertha Crowther (9 December 1921 – 8 August 2007) was a British athlete who competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics. Biography Crowther became the national 80 metres hurdles champion after winning the British WAAA Championships title at the 1946 WAAA Championships. She also finished third behind Dora Gardner in the high jump event. Crowther finished second behind Dorothy Tyler in the high jump event and third behind Maureen Gardner in the 80 metres hurdles event at the 1948 WAAA Championships. Shortly afterwards, representing Great Britain at the 1948 Olympic Games in London, she competed in the women's 80 metres hurdles competition. Crowther showcased her all round ability by becoming the inaugural national pentathlon champion at the 1949 WAAA Championships.
