The men's shot put event at the 1932 Olympic Games took place July 31. 15 athletes from 10 nations competed. The 1930 Olympic Congress in Berlin had reduced the limit from 4 athletes per NOC to 3 athletes.Official Report, p. 377. Leo Sexton of the United States won the gold medal, the nation's third consecutive and eighth overall victory in the men's shot put. It was also the third consecutive year the Americans took the top two places (including a full medal sweep in 1924), as Harlow Rothert took silver. František Douda won Czechoslovakia's first shot put medal with a bronze. Background This was the ninth appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. József Darányi
József Darányi (28 September 1905 – 23 December 1990) was a Hungarian shot putter who competed in the 1928 Summer Olympics, in the 1932 Summer Olympics, and in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Career Darányi broke the world record in both-handed shot put (an event in which the shot was thrown with the right hand and separately with the left hand, and the best results for each hand were added together) on three occasions. He first broke Ralph Rose's world record of 28.00 m in June 1931, achieving a total of 28.04 m (14.80 m/13.24 m). Three months later he improved to 28.67 m (15.43 m/13.24 m). Darányi lost the record to Jack Torrance in 1934, but regained it the following year with a total of 29.46 m (15.77 m/13.69 m), his eventual best. Athletics At The 1932 Summer Olympics
At the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, 29 athletics events were contested. It was the first time the 50 kilometres race walk appeared in the athletic program at the Games. This was the second time women's events in athletics were included in the Olympic Games program and the first time that women competed in the javelin throw and 80m hurdles at the Olympics. There was a total of 386 participants from 34 countries competing. The athletics events took place at Los Angeles Olympic Stadium, now the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Pat O'Callaghan
Patrick O'Callaghan (28 January 1906 – 1 December 1991) was an Irish hammer thrower and double Olympic gold medallist. He was the first athlete from Ireland to win an Olympic medal under the Irish flag rather than the British flag. Early and private life O'Callaghan was born in the townland of Knockaneroe, near Kanturk, County Cork, on 28 January 1906, the second of three sons born to Paddy O'Callaghan, a farmer, and Jane (née Healy). He began his education at the age of two at Derrygalun national school.
