Athletics At The 1932 Summer Olympics – Men's 1500 Metres
The men's 1500 metres middle-distance event at the 1932 Summer Olympics took place on August 3 and August 4 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Twenty-four athletes from 14 nations competed. The 1930 Olympic Congress in Berlin had reduced the limit from 4 athletes per NOC to 3 athletes.Official Report, p. 377. The event was won by Luigi Beccali of Italy, earning the nation's first medal in the 1500 metres. Canada also won its first 1500 metres medal, with Phil Edwards's bronze. Background This was the ninth appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. Despite the low attendance in 1932 generally, the 1500 metres had a strong field. Returning finalists from 1928 were Finland's medalists, gold winner Harri Larva and bronze winner Eino Purje, along with sixth-place finisher Paul Martin of Switzerland. Frank Crowley (athlete)
Arthur Francis Crowley (May 21, 1909 – April 13, 1980) was an American middle-distance and long-distance runner. He finished 8th in the 1500 meters at the 1932 Summer Olympics. Career Crowley was Manhattan College's first Olympian and NCAA champion graduating in 1934. Won NCAA two-mile championship in 1934. And, selected for the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1980. Crowley placed third in the 1500 meters at the 1931 national championships. The following year the national championships doubled as the Olympic Trials and this time Crowley was second, behind Norwood Hallowell but ahead of NCAA champion Glenn Cunningham and American record holder Gene Venzke. He thus qualified for the Olympics in Los Angeles, where he placed 8th. Folke Karl Skoog (July 15, 1908 – February 15, 2001) was a Swedish-born American plant physiologist who was a pioneer in the field of plant growth regulators, particularly cytokinins. Skoog was a recipient of the National Medal of Science 1991. Born in Halland, Sweden, Skoog immigrated to the United States during a trip to California in 1925, and was naturalized as a citizen almost a decade later. He competed, and finished sixth in heat 2, in the 1500 meter race during the 1932 Summer Olympics. In 1936, he received his PhD in biology from Caltech for his work done with auxin, a plant hormone. Norwood Penrose Hallowell III (2 November 1909 – 28 March 1979) was an American middle distance runner who competed in the 1932 Summer Olympics. He broke the Olympic record for the 1500-meter race. Early life He was born to Norwood Penrose Hallowell Jr. (1875-1961), a president of Lee, Higginson & Co. and Margaret Ingersoll Bowditch Hallowell (1881-1953), a great-granddaughter of navigator Nathaniel Bowditch. He competed for Harvard after prepping at Milton Academy, and later spent time at Balliol College, one of Oxford's oldest constituent colleges. Hallowell participated in Oxford's track team. While at Harvard, he captained his freshman and varsity cross country teams. His 4m 12.4s mile was the fastest ever stepped by a college student.
