Athletics At The 1912 Summer Olympics – Men's Pole Vault
The men's pole vault was a Track and field, track and field athletics event held as part of the Athletics at the 1912 Summer Olympics programme. It was the fifth appearance of the event, which is one of 12 to have been held at every Summer Olympics. The competition was held on Wednesday, July 10, 1912, and on Thursday, July 11, 1912. Twenty-five pole vaulters from eleven nations competed. NOCs could enter up to 12 athletes.Official report, p. 61. It was the second straight Games in which more than 3 medals were awarded in the event. The event was won by Harry Babcock (pole vaulter), Harry Babcock of the United States, the nation's fifth consecutive victory in the event. Fellow Americans Frank Nelson (athlete), Frank Nelson and Marc Wright tied for second and were both awarded silver; normally, this would have constituted a medal sweep. Manlio Legat (30 August 1889 – 17 December 1955) was an Italian track and field athlete who competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics in the decathlon, pole vault and long jump. Fernand Gonder
Fernand Gonder (12 June 1883 – 10 March 1969) was a French pole vaulter who won the gold medal at the 1906 Intercalated Games. Career Gonder was selected to represent France at the 1906 Olympic Games and won gold in the pole jump event. Four years later at the 1912 Summer Olympics he finished 15th in the same event. Gonder was the French champion in 1904, 1905, 1913 and 1914, finishing second in 1912. Gonder also won the British AAA Championships title in the pole jump event at the 1905 AAA Championships. He returned in 1913 to claim third place behind Swedes Clas Gille and Carl Hårleman at the 1913 AAA Championships. Clas Thorulf Gille (1 May 1888 – 26 August 1952) was a Swedish pole vaulter who competed at the 1912 Summer Olympics. Career Gille was selected to represent Sweden in his home Olympics in 1912 in Stockholm. He competed in the pole jump event (as it was known as at the time) and finished in 12th place.
