Athletics At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's 5000 Metres
The women's 5000 metres at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place on 19–22 August at the Beijing National Stadium. The qualifying standards were 15:09.00 (A standard) and 15:24.00 (B standard). While the race was strategically different, the results were much the same as the 10,000m final a week earlier. Elvan Abeylegesse took the lead early, but the field did not dissipate behind her. Instead, Ethiopians, Kenyans and newly-crowned steeplechase world record holder, Gulnara Samitova-Galkina, countered each attempt to pull away. Going into the last lap, Abeylegesse of Turkey and three Ethiopians were at the front, with the Kenyan team and Russian Liliya Shobukhova trailing. Tirunesh Dibaba jumped into the lead with the expected chase coming from Meseret Defar, in one of the few head-to-head battles between these two stars. Kayoko Fukushi
is a Japanese long-distance runner, who specializes in the 5000, 10,000 metres and marathon. Fukushi represented Japan at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. She was the bronze medallist in the marathon at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics. She holds a marathon best of 2:22:17 hours. Fukushi won two silver medals at the 2002 Asian Games and then won the 10,000 m gold medal at the 2006 edition. Simret Sultan Ghebermichael (born 20 July 1984) is an Eritrean long-distance runner who specializes in the 5000 metres and cross-country running. She was born in Mirara. She won the Cross de Atapuerca competition in Spain in 2007. Yuriko Kobayashi
Yuriko Kobayashi (; born 12 December 1988) is a Japanese professional middle- and long-distance runner who specializes in the 1500 metres and 5000 metres. She represented Japan at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She started out in middle-distance events, running in the 800 metres at the 2004 World Junior Championships and then winning a 1500 m silver medal at the World Youth Championships in Athletics the following year. Jennifer Rhines (born July 1, 1974 in Syracuse, New York) is an American long-distance runner who competes in track, cross country and road running events. She has competed in three different Summer Olympics and made 15 US Teams. Rhines attended Villanova University as an undergraduate. Kara Goucher (born Kara Grgas on July 9, 1978) is an American long-distance runner, author, television commentator, and podcaster. Shalane Grace Flanagan (born July 8, 1981) is an American long-distance runner, coach, Olympic medalist and New York City Marathon champion. She was the first American woman to win the New York City Marathon since 1977. She holds the NACAC area records in both the 10k and 15k road races.
