Athletics At The 2000 Summer Olympics – Men's Discus Throw
The men's discus throw event at the 2000 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program was held at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday, 24 September and Monday, 25 September. Forty-five athletes from 28 nations competed. The event was won by Virgilijus Alekna of Lithuania, the nation's second victory in the men's discus throw. Lars Riedel of Germany took silver, becoming the 13th man to win multiple discus throw medals. Frantz Kruger earned South Africa's first medal in the event with his bronze. The qualifying athletes progressed through to the final where the qualifying distances are scrapped and they start afresh with up to six throws. The qualifying distance was 64.00 metres. For all qualifiers who did not achieve the standard, the remaining spaces in the final were filled by the longest throws until a total of 12 qualifiers. Michael Möllenbeck
Michael Friedrich Möllenbeck (12 December 1969 – 2 November 2022) was a German discus thrower. Möllenbeck's greatest achievements were two World Championship bronze medals, and his bronze at the 2005 World Championships was especially welcome as Germany struggled to win medals. His personal best throw was 67.64 metres, achieved in June 2002 in Dortmund. This ranks him seventh among German discus throwers, behind Jürgen Schult, Lars Riedel, Wolfgang Schmidt, Armin Lemme, Hein-Direck Neu and Alwin Wagner Alwin Josef Wagner (born 11 August 1950 in Melsungen, Hessen) is a West Germany, West German discus thrower and weight lifter, who was affiliated with ''University Sportclub Mainz'' (USC Mainz). Aleksander Tammert
Aleksander Tammert (born 2 February 1973) is an Estonian discus thrower. Athletics career Tammert competed at the 2004 Olympics and originally finishing fourth, but as gold medal winner Róbert Fazekas was disqualified, Tammert received the bronze medal. A month later he placed third at the World Athletics Final. In 2005 Tammert placed fourth at both the World Championships and the World Athletics Final. Fellow Estonian Gerd Kanter won silver medals at both these events. In 2006 he placed third at both the European Championships and the World Athletics Final. Kanter again won silver medals at both these events. His personal best throw is 70.82m (232'3½"), set on 15 April 2006 in Denton, Texas. Jason Tunks (born May 7, 1975 in London, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian former discus thrower who has represented Canada in the Olympics in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. He currently holds the Canadian National Record for discus at . Dmitriy Shevchenko (athlete)
Dmitriy Igorievich Shevchenko (; born May 13, 1968, in Taganrog) is a Russian discus thrower who won silver medals at the World and European Championships. Despite this he did not throw past the 70 metres mark until 2002, when he achieved his personal best throw of 70.54 metres in Krasnodar. His three participations in the Olympics were all fruitless, especially the 2004 edition where he exited without any valid throws. He is a six-time National champions discus throw (men), national champion in the discus event. He missed the 1996 and 1997 seasons, due to a doping suspension.
