Athletics At The 1996 Summer Olympics – Men's Shot Put
The men's shot put event at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. There were 36 competitors from 26 nations, with twelve athletes reaching the final. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event took place on July 26, 1996. The event was won by Randy Barnes of the United States, the nation's second consecutive and 16th overall victory in the men's shot put. Barnes was the 11th man to win multiple medals in the event, and the first to do so in nonconsecutive Games. His teammate John Godina took silver, while Oleksandr Bagach earned Ukraine's first medal in the event with a bronze. Giorgio Venturi (born 23 June 1966) is a former Italian shot putter who competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Biography He participated at the competition which was one of the best team results of the Italian national athletics team in the shot put events at the International competitions. Arsi Harju
Arsi Ilari Harju (born 18 March 1974) is a Finnish former track and field athlete who competed in the shot put. He won the gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He set his personal best of 21.39 in the qualification. In the final, Harju secured the gold medal with his second round shot put of 21.29, beating silver medalist Adam Nelson by 8 cm and bronze medalist John Godina by 9 cm. Kent Larsson
Kent Erik Larsson (born 10 June 1963) is a retired Swedish athlete who specialised in the shot put. He represented his country at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics as well as one indoor and three outdoor World Championships. Born in Östersund, he discovered athletics through school competitions and started his career in the club IF Castor. He won his first Swedish championship in 1987, and also set his career best at the Swedish championships of 1992 – but also achieved 20,02 in New York in 1994. Mika Kristian Halvari (born February 13, 1970, in Kemi) is a Finnish former shot putter. When competing, he represented Kemin Kunto and Helsingin Kisa-Veikot. Halvari won the 1995 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Barcelona, Spain and came in second in the World Championships in Athletics in Gothenburg, Sweden the same year. In 1998, he won a silver medal at the 1998 European Indoor Athletics Championships held in Valencia, Spain. In addition to his success internationally, Halvari has won 4 gold medals, 3 silver and 1 bronze in the Finnish Championships. Towards the end of his career, Halvari was injured numerous times; for example, his Achilles tendon snapped twice.
