Athletics At The 1980 Summer Olympics – Men's 100 Metres
The 100 metres, men's 100 metres event was one of the events in the Athletics at the 1980 Summer Olympics, 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. The competition was held on July 24, 1980, and on July 25, 1980. Sixty-five athletes from 40 nations competed. Each nation was limited to 3 athletes per rules in force since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Allan Wells of Great Britain, that nation's first title in the men's 100 metres since 1924. Cuba took its first medal in the event since 1964, with Silvio Leonard's silver matching the nation's best result. Petar Petrov (runner), Petar Petrov's bronze was Bulgaria's first Olympic medal in the men's 100 metres. Allan Wells and Silvio Leonard both clocked the same time in the final (10.25 seconds) which was the first time this had happened in the men's Olympic 100 metres final since the introduction of fully automatic time, fully automatic timing. Jim Hines
James Ray Hines (September 10, 1946 – June 3, 2023) was an American track and field athlete and National Football League (NFL) player, who held the 100-meter world record for 15 years. In 1968, he became the first man to officially break the 10-second barrier in the 100 meters, and won individual and relay gold at the Mexico City Olympics. Track career Born in Dumas, Arkansas, Hines was raised in Oakland, California, and graduated from McClymonds High School in 1964. He was a baseball player in his younger years until he was spotted by track coach Jim Coleman as a running talent, and Hines became a sprinter. Pietro Mennea
Pietro Paolo Mennea (; 28 June 1952 – 21 March 2013), nicknamed ("the Arrow of the South"), was an Italian sprinter and politician. He was most successful in the 200 m event, winning a gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, and setting a world record at 19.72 seconds in September 1979. This record stood for almost 17 years – the longest duration in the event history – and is still the European record. John Carew (born 17 September 1952) is a retired sprint runner from Sierra Leone. Christopher Brathwaite
Christopher Anthony Brathwaite (August 12, 1948 – November 12, 1984) was an athlete from Trinidad and Tobago who specialized in the 100 and 200 metres. He was born in Maraval, Trinidad and attended Eastern New Mexico University, Spokane Community College and University of Oregon (UO). He graduated from the UO with a BA and MA in sociology. He was the Trinidad and Tobago 100/200 metres champion in 1978, and he won these titles again in 1983. He competed in two Olympic Games, where he reached the semi-final of the 100 metres at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and the quarter-final of the 200 metres. He also competed at the inaugural World Championships in Helsinki. Brathwaite was killed on November 12, 1984, when he was shot while running on Pre's Trail near Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon.
