Athletics At The 1976 Summer Olympics – Men's Pole Vault
The men's pole vault competition featured in the athletics programme at the 1976 Summer Olympics and was held at the Olympic Stadium in Montréal on 24 and 26 July. Twenty-seven athletes from 13 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. All three medallists tied the Olympic record mark of 5.50 metres. Tadeusz Ślusarski of Poland and Antti Kalliomäki of Finland both cleared all heights up to 5.50 m with no misses; Ślusarski passed two heights more than Kalliomäki, and won on the basis of fewer vaults in accordance with the rules of the time. American Dave Roberts, who also cleared 5.50 m on his first try but had one miss from an earlier height, took the bronze medal. Władysław Kozakiewicz
Władysław Kozakiewicz (; born 8 December 1953) is a Lithuanian-born retired Polish people, Polish athlete who specialised in the pole vault. He is best known for winning the gold medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and the bras d'honneur gesture which he showed to the hostile Soviet crowd. In Poland, where the gesture was viewed as a symbol of resistance against Soviet dominance, it became known as "Kozakiewicz's gesture" (). In addition, he won several medals at continental level, won two Summer Universiades and broke the pole vault world record three times, twice Men's pole vault world record progression, outdoors and once Men's pole vault indoor world record progression, indoors. Kjell Gunnar Isaksson (born 28 February 1948) is a retired pole vaulter from Sweden, who broke the world record several times in 1972. Pole vaulting First he broke the record set by Christos Papanikolaou of Greece and San Jose State University two years earlier, by jumping 5.51 metres in Austin, Texas, becoming the second man to clear 18 feet. A week later he improved it to 5.54 m in Los Angeles, California. His technique inspired several aspects of the Petrov/ Bubka model. Two months later he added another centimeter at a meet in Helsingborg, Sweden.
