The men's 800 metres event at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal was held on July 23, 1976, July 24, 1976, and on July 25, 1976. Forty-two athletes from 31 nations competed. James Robinson (distance Runner)
James J. Robinson Jr. (born August 27, 1954, in Oakland, California) is a former American middle-distance runner. He was the dominant American 800 meters runner from the mid-1970s through the mid 1980s. He ran in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, finishing fifth in his semi-final and not making the final. He was on the ill-fated 1980 U.S. Olympic team that did not get to compete due to the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott. He did however receive one of 461 Congressional Gold Medals created especially for the spurned athletes. His international achievements included a silver medal at the 1979 IAAF World Cup and 1981 IAAF World Cup and a gold medal at the 1979 Pan American Games over the reigning Olympic Gold Medalist and (until that week) world record holder, Alberto Juantorena. Frank Clement (athlete)
Francis James Clement (born 26 April 1952) is a Scottish retired athlete who competed primarily in the 1500 metres and participated in the 1976 Summer Olympics. Biography Clement was a member of Bellahouston Harriers and a graduate of Strathclyde University. Clement finished second behind Rod Dixon in the 1500 metres event at the 1973 AAA Championships but by virtue of being the highest placed British athlete in the event he was considered the British 1500 metres champion. In 1973 Clement achieved success in the European Cup final which he won in a time of 3:40.8, defeating future Olympic bronze medalist Paul-Heinz Wellmann and 1974 European champion Klaus-Peter Justus. He also won the 1973 World Student Games (Universiade) 1500m in a time of 3:42.32 defeating the top American runner Tony Waldrop. Muhammad Younis (4 November 1948 – 29 October 2024) was a Pakistani middle distance runner who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics and the 1976 Summer Olympics. He still holds the national records in 1500 metres, 2000 metres, 3000 metres and 5000 metres with times of 3:41.4, 5:09.7, 8:05.65 and 14:08.4 respectively, all set in West Germany during the 1970s. Thomas Wessinghage (born 22 February 1952 in Hagen, North Rhine-Westphalia) is a German former middle- and long-distance runner who won the 1982 European Championships' final over 5000 metres beating the British world-record holder David Moorcroft. Because he was already thirty at the time, and had been an international-level runner for a decade, this victory was a long-awaited one for him. He admitted that he decided to run the 5000 metres instead of the 1500 metres, because he lost to Ovett and Coe so often in the shorter distance. Marian Gęsicki (born 19 May 1953) is a retired Polish runner who specialized in the 400 metres and 800 metres. He was born in Nowogródek and represented the club Zawisza Bydgoszcz.
