Athletics At The 1972 Summer Olympics – Men's 5000 Metres
The Men's 5000 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany took place on 7 and 10 September 1972. Having won the 10,000 metres a week earlier, Lasse Virén controlled the pace through the first 2000 metres in 5:32.61. David Bedford, tired of the slow pace, passing Viren and leading a crowd to go around to a faster pace. As the pace accelerated, Javier Álvarez came from the rear around the field to take the point for the next kilometre. At 3200 metres, Nikolay Sviridov challenged for the lead. Steve Prefontaine took the lead at 3400 metres. Over the next lap, Viren came from sixth place in line to mark Prefontaine. Viren was in turn marked by Emiel Puttemans. A five-man breakaway formed. With 850 metres to go, Viren passed Prefontaine. Olympiastadion () is a stadium located in Munich, Germany. Situated at the heart of the ''Olympiapark München'' in northern Munich, the stadium was built as the main venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics. Juha Väätäinen
Juha Väätäinen (born 12 July 1941) is a Finnish former athlete. He is the winner of the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter gold medals at the 1971 European Championships, held in Helsinki. He was the eldest of the successful Finnish runners, the others being Lasse Virén, Pekka Vasala, Tapio Kantanen, Martti Vainio, and Kaarlo Maaninka, who came into the limelight in the 1970s. He served as a Member of the Finnish Parliament for Helsinki, representing the Finns Party between 2011 and 2015. Athletics career Early career 1960-68 Väätäinen started his running career as a sprinter. He won his first junior Finnish championship in the 400 metres hurdles in 1960. Anthony Charles Benson (born 20 May 1942) is an Australian former long-distance runner who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics. As an athlete, Benson won the 1969 Pacific Conference Games 1500m, set Australian 2000m and 3000m records, ran a sub 4 minute mile and the world’s 8th fastest ever time for 3000m, recorded a world-best time of 27:37 for a road 10 kilometres, was ranked 5th in the world over 5000m, and represented Australia at the 1972 Munich Olympics. George Young (runner)
George L. Young (July 24, 1937 – November 8, 2022) was an American track athlete and college coach. He won a bronze medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics in the 3000 meter steeplechase and held several American records in events ranging from the two mile to the 5000 meter race. He broke two world records, in the indoor two and three mile events. Early life and education Born in Roswell, New Mexico, Young graduated from Western High School (now Silver High School), in Silver City, New Mexico, in 1955. He then attended the University of Arizona where he competed in track and field and joined the Beta Iota chapter of Theta Chi fraternity.
