Athletics At The 1964 Summer Olympics – Men's 1500 Metres
The men's 1500 metres was the third-longest of the seven men's track races in the Athletics at the 1964 Summer Olympics program in Tokyo. It was held on 17 October, 19 October, and 21 October 1964. 50 athletes from 34 nations entered, with 7 not starting the first round. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The first round was held on 17 October, with the semifinals on 19 October and the final on 21 October. The event was won by Peter Snell of New Zealand; it was the first win by a Kiwi in the event since Jack Lovelock did so in 1936. Snell was also the first man to double in the 800 and 1500 metres races since Albert Hill in 1920. Olympic Stadium (Tokyo)
The Japan National Stadium, officially named and formerly known as or , is a multi-purpose stadium used mostly for association football in Kasumigaoka, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. The facility served as the main stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the venue for track and field athletics events at the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics in 2021. Demolition of the old National Stadium was completed in May 2015, allowing for the construction of the new stadium to begin on 11 December 2016. The original plans for the new stadium were scrapped in July 2015 by Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, who announced a rebid after a public outcry prompted by increased building costs. Jim Ryun
James Ronald Ryun (born April 29, 1947) is an American former Republican politician and Olympic track and field athlete, who at his peak was widely considered the world's top middle-distance runner. He won a silver medal in the 1500 m at the 1968 Summer Olympics, and was the first high school athlete to run a mile in under four minutes. Ahmed Issa
Ahmed Issa (July 17, 1943 – 1983) was a middle distance runner who competed for Chad. Issa was part of the two-man team that first ever represented Chad at the Summer Olympics when he competed at the 1964 Games held in Tokyo, he competed in the 800 metres, in the first round he came second behind the German Manfred Kinder, in the next round he finished 6th and so didn't qualify for the final. He was featured prominently in the official film of the Games – Tokyo Olympiad by Kon Ichikawa. Four years later at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City Issa finished 4th in his heat in the 800 metres and failed to qualify. He would fare better in the 1500 metres, finishing 4th in the first round and qualifying for semi-finals, in which he finished 8th and failed to make the qualifying mark of the top six from his heat to qualify. Neville Myton
Neville Myton (28 May 1946 – 19 May 2021) was a Jamaican middle distance runner who competed in the 1964 Summer Olympics and in the 1968 Summer Olympics. He was a double gold medallist at the 1966 Central American and Caribbean Games, taking the individual 800 metres title and also sharing in the team gold medals with the Jamaican 4×400 metres relay team. He won a bronze medal in the 4×400 metre relay at the 1967 Pan American Games. Myton set a national junior record in Jamaica when he finished the 800m race in 1:47.2 minutes at the 1964 Olympics.
