Decathlon
The decathlon is a combined event in athletics consisting of 10 track and field events. The word "decathlon" was formed, in analogy to the word "pentathlon", from Greek δέκα (''déka'', meaning "ten") and ἄθλος (''áthlos'', or ἄθλον, ''áthlon'', meaning "contest" or "prize"). Events are held over two consecutive days and the winners are determined by the combined performance in all. Performance is judged on a points system in each event, not by the position achieved. The decathlon is contested mainly by male athletes, while female athletes typically compete in the heptathlon. Traditionally, the title of " World's Greatest Athlete" has been given to the person who wins the decathlon. This began when Gustav V of Sweden told Jim Thorpe, "Sir, you are the world's greatest athlete" after Thorpe won the decathlon at the Stockholm Olympics in 1912. Pacaembu Stadium
Pacaembu Stadium (, ; named after the Pacaembu neighbourhood), currently known as Mercado Libre, Mercado Livre Arena Pacaembu for sponsorship reasons, is an association football stadium in São Paulo, Brazil. Located in the Pacaembu neighbourhood, it is owned by Municipal Prefecture of São Paulo. The stadium was inaugurated on 27 April 1940, in the presence of the Brazilian President Getúlio Vargas, the interventor Adhemar de Barros and the mayor of São Paulo, Francisco Prestes Maia, Prestes Maia. The stadium used to hold 40,199 people and its Pitch (sports), pitch dimensions are 104 m of length by 70 m of width, but is currently undergoing a renovation that will reduce capacity. Bill Gairdner
William Douglas Gairdner (October 19, 1940 – January 12, 2024) was a Canadian track and field athlete in the men's 400 m hurdles and the men's decathlon at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. He was awarded a silver medal in decathlon event at the 1963 Pan American Games in Brazil. Gairdner attended Appleby College in Oakville, and was a resident of Toronto. Following his hurdling career, he applied himself to the field of academia. Héctor Tomás Thomas Martínez (10 October 1938 – 23 December 2008) was a decathlon, decathlete from Venezuela. Career He won more than ten medals in various athletics events at the Bolivarian Games from 1961 to 1973, as well as three medals at the Pan American Games in 1963 and 1967. He competed in the decathlon at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics, achieving his best result of 20th place in 1960. In 1998, he was inducted into the Venezuelan Sports Hall of Fame. Russ Hodge
Russell Arden Hodge (born September 12, 1939) is an American track and field athlete, world record holder in decathlon (1966–1967), Olympic competitor from 1964, and silver medalist from the Pan American Games (1971). Track and field career Hodge competed at the 1963 Pan American Games in São Paulo, where he finished 4th in decathlon. He competed in decathlon at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where he placed ninth. In July 1966 he set a world record in ''decathlon'' at a competition in Los Angeles, with 8,230 points, a record which lasted until May 1967.
