Athletics At The 1920 Summer Olympics – Men's 1500 Metres
The men's 1500 metres event was part of the Athletics at the 1920 Summer Olympics, track and field athletics programme at the 1920 Summer Olympics. The competition was held on Wednesday, August 18, 1920, and on Thursday, August 19, 1920. Twenty-nine runners from 12 nations competed. No nation had more than 4 runners, suggesting the limit had been reduced from the 12 maximum in force in 1908 and 1912. The event was won by Albert Hill (athlete), Albert Hill of Great Britain, completing his middle-distance double (gold in the 800 metres and 1500 metres). It was the nation's second consecutive and third overall championship in the men's 1500 metres. Background This was the sixth appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. Bevil Rudd
Bevil Gordon D'Urban Rudd (5 October 1894 – 2 February 1948) was a South African athlete, the 1920 Olympic Champion in the 400 metres. Biography Rudd was born in Kimberley. He was the son of Henry Percy Rudd and Mable Mina Blyth; paternal grandson of Charles Rudd, who co-founded the De Beers diamond mining company, and Frances Chiappini and maternal grandson of Captain Matthew Smith Blyth CMG, chief magistrate of the Transkei, and Elizabeth Cornelia Philpott. During his schooling at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown (Upper House) he excelled both as a student and as an athlete, and he was granted a scholarship for the University of Oxford where he studied at Trinity College, Oxford. Rudd served in the First World War, and was awarded a Military Cross for bravery. Ruud won two British AAA Championships titles in the 440 yards and 880 yards events at the 1920 AAA Championships. Paavo Nurmi
Paavo Johannes Nurmi (; 13 June 1897 – 2 October 1973) was a Finland, Finnish middle-distance running, middle-distance and long-distance running, long-distance runner. He was called the "Flying Finn" because he dominated distance running in the 1920s. Nurmi set 22 official List of world records in athletics, world records at distances between 1500 metres, 1,500 metres and 20 kilometres, and won nine gold and three silver medals in his 12 events in the Summer Olympic Games. At his peak, Nurmi was undefeated for 121 races at distances from 800 m upwards. Throughout his 14-year career, he remained unbeaten in cross country events and the 10,000 metres. Duncan McPhee
Duncan McPhee (17 October 1892 – 22 September 1950) was a British and Scottish middle-distance runner who competed at the 1920 Summer Olympics. Career McPhee won the Scottish mile championship, when a member of the Clydesdale Harriers before World War I. McPhee finished third behind George Hutson in the 1 mile event at the 1914 AAA Championships. After the war, McPhee had left the Clydesdale Harriers for the West of Scotland Harriers and finished second behind Frenchman Armand Burtin in the 1 mile event at the 1920 AAA Championships. The following month at the 1920 Olympic Games held in Antwerp, Belgium, McPhee was selected by Scotland, where he competed in the men's 1500 metres. Sven Lundgren
Sven Emil Lundgren (29 September 1896 – 18 June 1960) was a Swedish middle-distance runner who competed in the 800 m, 1500 and 3000 m events at the 1920 and 1924 Olympics. Career Lundgren had his best results at the Olympic Games in 1920, when he won a bronze medal in the 3000 m team contest and finished fifth in the 1500 m. He failed to reach the finals in all other events. Lundgren won eight Swedish titles, four over 800 m and four over 1500 m, six of them in 1919–1921. From 1922 to 1926 he held the world record in the 1000 m, and from 1919 to 1925 in the 4 × 1500 m relay.
