Associação Olímpica de Itabaiana, commonly referred to as Itabaiana, is a Brazilian professional club based in Itabaiana, Sergipe founded on 10 July 1938. It competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C, the third tier of Brazilian football, as well as in the Campeonato Sergipano, the top flight of the Sergipe state football league. Itabaiana is the second-best ranked team from Sergipe in CBF's national club ranking, behind Confiança. They are also the best placed team in the state from outside of Greater Aracaju, at 85th overall. History Itabaiana were founded on July 10, 1938, after Botafogo Sport Club folded. The club competed in the Série A in 1974, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982. In 2024, Itabaiana have made the semi-finals of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D, clinching promotion to the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C in 2025. Estádio Etelvino Mendonça, sometimes known as Mendonção, is a football (soccer), football stadium in Itabaiana, Sergipe, Brazil. It has a maximum capacity of 10,000 people, and hosts the home matches of Associação Olímpica de Itabaiana. History Inaugurated on 7 March 1971 under the name of Estádio Presidente Emílio Garrastazu Médici as an honour to then president Emílio Garrastazu Médici, the stadium hosted a match between Associação Olímpica de Itabaiana, Itabaiana and Grêmio FBPA, Grêmio, which ended 0–0. The stadium's capacity was increased in 1985 and 2010, when new stands were introduced. In January 2016, Sergipe Governor Jackson Barreto signed a decree to change the name of several buildings in the state, removing its link with the Military dictatorship in Brazil, military dictatorship agents. Renamed Estádio Etelvino Mendonça, the stadium was named as an honour to a politician in the city who encouraged sports practice. References

The Campeonato Brasileiro Série D (English: Brazilian Championship Serie D), commonly known as the Série D or the Brazilian Série D to distinguish it from the Italian Serie D, is the fourth division of the Brazilian football league system, and was announced by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) on 9 April 2008. The Campeonato Brasileiro Série D was formed from the split of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C, Série C, keeping its best 20 clubs and playing double round robin as does the top three divisions. The Série D keeps the same format of the older Série C, but with participation limited to 40 clubs recognized by the state federation. In 2016 the Série D was expanded to 68 clubs, but in 2022 it was reduced to 64 clubs.
