Arrest Of Ekrem İmamoğlu
On 19 March 2025, Mayor of Istanbul, Istanbul mayor and presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu from the opposition Republican People's Party was Detention (confinement)#Turkey, detained by General Directorate of Security (Turkey), Turkish police on suspicion of Corruption in Turkey, corruption, extortion, bribery, money laundering, and supporting terrorism, particularly the PKK. İmamoğlu was later arrested and sent to Marmara Prison on corruption charges on 23 March 2025. In the 2025 Republican People's Party presidential primary later that day over 15 million people voted in his support. His arrest, along with that of more than 100 other people, caused 2025 Turkish protests, widespread protests and demonstrations over perceived political motivations. The Council of Europe, European Parliament and Human Rights Watch strongly condemned the detention of İmamoğlu, describing it as against the will of the people. Judicial System Of Turkey
The judicial system of Turkey is defined by Articles 138 to 160 of the Constitution of Turkey. With the founding of the Republic, Turkey adopted a Civil law (legal system), civil law legal system, replacing Ottoman law and the Sharia courts. The Turkish civil code (1926), Civil Code, adopted in 1926, was based on the Swiss Civil Code of 1907 and the Swiss Code of Obligations of 1911. Although it underwent a number of changes in 2002, it retains much of the basis of the original Code.
