Area codes 709 and 879 are the telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the entire Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. History The first telephone system was installed in Newfoundland in 1885, but domestic long-distance calls within the Dominion of Newfoundland could be placed on a limited basis only in 1921. The first long-distance call from Newfoundland to Canada was made on January 10, 1939, by using a shortwave radio link operated by the Canadian Marconi Company in Montréal. Shortwave radio also carried calls from St. John's to London, England. When planning was completed for the original NANP area codes in 1947, Newfoundland had not yet become of part of Canada. No provisions had been made to include Newfoundland in the continental numbering plan, which later became the North American Numbering Plan. Arnold's Cove
Arnold's Cove ( 2016 Population 949) is a town on Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is in Division 1 on Placentia Bay. The name is found in population returns of 1836, and may have been given after the forename of a fisherman. In 1864 there was one family, and by 1893 there was a post office. It was a fishing settlement located approximately two kilometers from the Newfoundland Railway, located 35 miles from Placentia Junction. It was a Local Improvement District in 1967 and incorporated as a town the same year. It had a population of 100 in 1911 and 1,160 in 1976. It has been a center of economic growth recently, due to its proximity to projects involved with the Hibernia offshore oil platform. Norman's Bay
Norman's Bay is a local service district and designated place in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is an isolated community at the head of Norman Bay, an extension of Martin Bay. The population of the community was 15 in the 2021 census. Norman Bay was a winter settlement for the fishing stations of Snug Harbour and Venison Tickle. At the time when southeast Labrador fishing stations were being encouraged to resettle in the 1960s, the Ward family at Snug Harbour resisted pressures to move to Charlottetown or another larger community and instead made Norman's Bay their permanent home. Most people are still dependent on fishing as the main source of income. The community is reliant on the postal, air, and medical services in nearby Charlottetown. NewTel Communications was a telephone and internet service provider in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Originally known as the Avalon Telephone Company, it served the Avalon Peninsula and later became the Newfoundland Telephone Company and served several additional regions: southwestern Newfoundland between Port-aux-Basques and Corner Brook; part of the Burin Peninsula; Windsor and Grand Falls; and most of Labrador.
