Ardscoil Rís, Limerick
Ardscoil Rís is a voluntary, all-boys, Roman Catholic secondary school in Limerick, Ireland. Founded in 1963, it is located on the North Circular Road. History Ardscoil Rís was formally opened by the Christian Brothers, on the North Circular Road in Limerick, on 1 September 1963. It welcomed 52 pupils in its first year and classes were held in an old school house until the first purpose-built classrooms were available. This first intake included Pat Cox, who later became a politician. From its foundation, the school was managed by the Christian Brothers. In 1989, a board of management, representing trustees, staff and parents, was put in place and a lay principal was appointed. From these beginnings, the school, augmented by periodic extensions, grew. By 2018, it had grown to over 740 students and had fifty teaching staff. The Congregation of Christian Brothers (; abbreviated CFC) is a worldwide religious community within the Catholic Church, founded by Edmund Ignatius Rice, Edmund Rice. Their first school opened in Waterford, Ireland in 1802. At the time of its foundation, though much relieved from the harshest of the Penal Laws against Irish Catholics, Penal Laws by the Relief Acts, Catholics faced much discrimination throughout the newly created United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland pending full Catholic emancipation in 1829. Cian Lynch (born 3 January 1996) is an Irish hurler who plays as a centre forward for Limerick Championship club Patrickswell, where he has held the role of captain, and the Limerick senior team. Recognised for his skill level and team play, he is widely considered one of the best players in the current game and has often been described as a "midfield magician". He is also one of only two players to win the 'hurler of the year' award more than once, with the only other player to do so being Henry Shefflin with three wins. Declan Hannon
Declan Hannon (born 25 November 1992) is an Irish hurler who plays for Limerick Senior Championship club Adare and at inter-county level as captain of the Limerick senior hurling team. He captained Limerick to the All Ireland hurling title in 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 becoming the first Limerick captain since Mick Mackey to captain Limerick to victory more than once. He is the only hurling captain to lift the Liam MacCarthy Cup a record four times as well as lifting the Mackey cup in the Munster hurling final six times. John Galvin is a former Gaelic footballer who played as a midfielder for Limerick in a career spanning 15 years from 1999 to 2014. He played his club football with Croom before transferring to Cratloe in Clare where he had been living for some years. He was captain of the Limerick team that won the Munster Under-21 Football Championship in 2000. Kevin Downes (born 14 October 1991) is an Irish hurler who plays for Limerick Senior Championship club Na Piarsaigh and at inter-county level with the Limerick senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a full-forward. Playing career Ardscoil Rís Downes first came to prominence as a hurler with Ardscoil Rís in Limerick. Having played in every grade as a hurler, he was full-forward on the college's senior hurling team. 2018 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 2018 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) was the 131st staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. It is the first tier of senior inter-county championship hurling. The competition began on 12 May 2018 and ended on 19 August 2018. The draw for the championship round-robin fixtures was held off camera on 19 October 2017 and announced on the championship draw broadcast on RTÉ2. Shane Dowling
Shane Dowling (born 16 June 1954) is a former Australian politician. He was mayor of South Melbourne from 1989 to 1991 and mayor of Geelong from December 2004 to November 2005. Dowling is a former police officer, rising to become an inspector in the Victoria Police. He was serving in Melton at the time of his election as Geelong mayor. He was elected to the City of Greater Geelong council in 2001, representing Deakin Ward, and was re-elected in 2004. David Breen
David Breen (born 20 September 1985) is an Irish physiotherapist and hurler who played centre-forward and was the captain of the Limerick senior team. Breen made his first appearance for the team during the 2009 championship and has become a regular member of the starting fifteen over the last few seasons. Since then he has won one National Hurling League (Division 2) winners' medal. At club level, Breen has won both Munster and county championship winners' medals with Na Piarsaigh. The Limerick County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) () or Limerick GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Limerick. Cathal Crowe
Cathal Crowe (born 1 October 1982) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Clare constituency since the 2020 general election. Political career Crowe was first elected to Clare County Council in 2004 at 21 years of age, making him the youngest councillor in Ireland at the time.
