Annual Auckland Theatre Awards
The Annual Auckland Theatre Awards (colloquially The Hackmans, and not to be confused with the Auckland Community Theatre Awards) are annual performing arts awards presented by in Auckland New Zealand. The awards are normally presented at the Civic Theatre in Auckland. The Excellence Awards were introduced in 2014, and are judged by a panel of four to six industry judges. There is also a People's Choice section of awards. The awards were founded by Kip Chapman and Rachel Forman in 2008, and handed over to Eli Matthewson and Sophie Dowson in 2014. Awards for 2020 There were no awards presented for 2020. Awards for 2019 The awards for 2019 were presented at the Civic on 16 January 2020. Awards for 2018 The awards for 2018 were presented through a Facebook livestream rather than the usual live event at the Civic. Civic Theatre, Auckland
The Civic Theatre is a large heritage combination performing-arts theatre, live-music venue, and cinema seating 2,378 people in Auckland, New Zealand. First opened on 20 December 1929, it underwent a major renovation and two-year conservation effort in the late 1990s, and was reopened on 20 December 1999 (its 70th birthday). It is a famous example of the atmospheric theatre style wherein lighting and interior design create the illusion of an open sky complete with twinkling stars, giving the audience the impression of being seated in an outdoor auditorium at night. The Civic is managed by Auckland Live, a business unit of Auckland Unlimited. Significance The Civic is internationally significant as the largest surviving Atmospheric theatre, atmospheric cinema in Australasia and was the first purpose-built cinema of its kind in New Zealand. Jennifer Ward-Lealand
Jennifer Cecily Ward-Lealand (born 8 November 1962) is a New Zealand theatre and film actor, director, teacher and intimacy coordinator. She has worked for 40 years, appearing in over 120 theatre performances: Greek, Shakespeare, drama, comedy, devised, and musical theatre. Elizabeth Whiting
Elizabeth Whiting is a stage costume designer from New Zealand. Career Whiting trained under designer Eve Schlup at Auckland's Theatre Corporate. Her first costume designs were for Limbs Dance Company (late 1970s to mid-1980s) and she has costumed New Zealand Opera since 1995. Anapela Polataivao is a New Zealand actor, writer, and director of stage and screen. Background Polataivao was born in Samoa and has heritage from Vailoa, Vaiusu, Fagae'e and Safune. She grew up in South Auckland. Career Polataivao began acting as a child with her role at the age of eight. That Bloody Woman
''That Bloody Woman'' is a 2015 punk-rock musical written by Luke Di Somma and Gregory Cooper. It is based on the life of Kate Sheppard and charts the suffragism struggle in New Zealand and its opposition by Richard Seddon. The musical was commissioned by Christchurch Arts Festival and premiered there in August 2015. It played in Auckland and Christchurch in 2016, and toured New Plymouth, Wellington and Dunedin in 2017. The Basement Theatre
The Basement Theatre is an Auckland theatre founded by Charlie McDermott in 2008. The theatre focuses on providing a venue for young people in the performing arts to enter the industry. Their priorities are making theatre accessible for both those who work in the industry and audience members. The building was previously occupied by Silo Theatre which vacated the premises in 2007. Charlie McDermott, Michelle Blundell, and Morgana O'Reilly were employed as bartenders at the time and raised funds over the summer to take over the space. The theatre saw the debut of actors who have since rose to prominence including Rose Matafeo and Tom Sainsbury. They are funded by Creative New Zealand, Foundation North and Auckland City Council. In 2018 they had hosted over 600 shows. Carla Van Zon
Carla Marja Olga Van Zon (born 20 January 1952) is a New Zealand retired artistic director. She worked on international opportunities for New Zealand artists at Creative New Zealand, before becoming artistic director of the New Zealand International Festival of the Arts in Wellington in 1996.
