The American Falls is the second largest of the three waterfalls that together are known as Niagara Falls on the Niagara River along the Canada–United States border. American Falls, Idaho
American Falls is a city in and the county seat of Power County, Idaho, United States. The population was 4,568 at the time of the 2020 census. History American Falls was a landmark waterfall on the Snake River, named after a party of American trappers whose boat went over the falls. The Wilson Price Hunt expedition in 1811 camped at the falls one night and the expedition of John C. Frémont was here in 1843. The Oregon Trail passed north of town, through the present-day reservoir. Power plants first sprang up at the falls in 1901. American Falls was the first town in the U.S. to be entirely relocated. It was moved in 1925 to facilitate construction of the nearby American Falls Dam. The old townsite sits at the bottom of the reservoir, northwest of the present city. American Falls Dam
The American Falls Dam is a concrete gravity-type dam in the western United States, located near American Falls, Idaho, on river mile 714.7 of the Snake River. The dam and reservoir are a part of the Minidoka Project on the Snake River Plain and are used primarily for flood control, irrigation, and recreation. When the original dam was built in the 1920s by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the residents of American Falls were forced to relocate three-quarters of their town to make room for the reservoir. A second dam was completed in 1978 and the original structure was demolished. Although the dam itself is located in Power County, its reservoir also stretches northeastward into both Bingham County and Bannock County. Geology A lava dam created a broad shallow lake in the area of the Raft River during the late Pliocene, over one million years ago. American Falls High School
American Falls High School is a public secondary school located in American Falls, Idaho. It was established prior to 1909, and the most recent school building was completed in 2002 on the south west end of American Falls. Description American Falls High School houses grades nine through twelve. The newest building in the district, at approximately 142,000 square feet, it has 40 classrooms, a media center, a 1,477 seat gymnasium, and an auditorium that will seat 881 people. History The first American Falls settlement was located on the west bank of the Snake River. The first record of a school in that location credits pioneer Thomas Duncan, from Indiana, with helping to build the school there, sometime after his arrival in 1879.
