American Academy Of Diplomacy
The American Academy of Diplomacy is a private, nonprofit, non-partisan, elected organization whose active membership is limited to men and women who have held positions of high responsibility in crafting and implementing American foreign policy. They have served the United States as chiefs of mission in major embassies abroad, and/or equivalent high-level foreign policy positions in Washington. Founded in 1983. In its early years, the Academy provided the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations with commentary on the qualifications of those nominated by the President as ambassadors, but today it only does so in exceptional circumstances, such as if the Board of Directors feels strongly about a nominee's lack of qualifications to be ambassador. Michele Thoren Bond
Michele Thoren Bond (born 1953) is a retired U.S. diplomat and former Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. Early life and education Ambassador Bond grew up in Washington, D.C. She earned a bachelor's degree from Wellesley College, and master's degrees from Georgetown University and the National War College. Career Ambassador Bond joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1977. George Moose
George Edward Moose (born June 23, 1944) is an American diplomat who served as the chair of the board of directors of the United States Institute of Peace from 2021-2025. He formerly served as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs from 1993 to 1997, Representative to the United Nations in Geneva from 1997 to 2001, and as Ambassador to the Republics of Benin and Senegal in the 1980s and 1990s. He is primarily known for serving as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs in the Clinton Administration during the Rwandan genocide. Moose was fired as CEO and removed from the USIP board on by the Trump administration. The reason cited was noncompliance with a recent executive order on repurposing federally-supported foreign assistance. Early life and education McCarthy spent much of her youth in France and Argentina, where her father served in U.S. missions.
