Alter Do Chão, Pará
Alter do Chão is one of the administrative districts of the city of Santarém, Pará, Santarém, in Pará state located on the right bank of the Tapajós River, Tapajós. The distance to the city center about 37 kilometres across the highway Everaldo Martins (PA-457). It is the main tourist spot of Santarém, it houses the most beautiful freshwater beach in the world according to the British newspaper ''The Guardian'', and is popularly known as the Brazilian Caribbean. Etymology The name is a tribute to the Portuguese town of Alter do Chão. History Founded on March 6, 1626, by Portuguese Pedro Teixeira, it was elevated to a town by Francisco Xavier de Mendonça Furtado, governor of the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão, during Colonial Brazil, on March 6, 1758. Santarém, Pará
Santarém () is a Municipalities of Brazil, municipality in the western part of the state of Pará in Brazil. Located at the confluence of the Tapajós and Amazon Rivers, it has become a popular tourist destination. It is the second-most important city in the state, and the financial and economic center of the western part of the state. It leads the Santarém Metropolitan Area, made up of Santarém, Belterra and Mojuí dos Campos. Francisco Xavier De Mendonça Furtado
Francisco Xavier de Mendonça Furtado (9 October 1701–1769) was a Portuguese military officer and politician who served in the Portuguese Navy rising from soldier to sea-captain. Mendonça Furtado then became a colonial governor in Brazil, and finally secretary of state, Secretary of State of the Navy and Foreign Dominions in the Portuguese government. His major achievements included the extension of Portugal's Portuguese colonization of the Americas, colonial dominions in South America westward along the Amazon basin and the carrying out of economic and social reforms according to policies established in Lisbon. The State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão () was one of the states of the Portuguese Empire. History The state was created on 31 July 1751 by order of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquis of Pombal, the Secretary of the State for Joseph I of Portugal. Pedro Teixeira (b.1570-1585 - d.4 July 1641), occasionally referred to as the Conqueror of the Amazon, was a Portuguese conquistador and military officer, who became, in 1637, the first European to travel up and down the entire length of the Amazon River, he also headed the government of the captaincy of Pará in two different periods, one in 1620-1621 and another in 1640–1641.
