Alpine Skiing
Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel Ski binding, bindings, unlike other types of skiing (Cross-country skiing, cross-country, Telemark skiing, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Vladimir Andreyev (skier)
Vladimir Mikhailovich Andreyev (, also spelled Andreev, born 9 February 1958) is a retired Soviet alpine skier. Career He raced in the Alpine Skiing World Cup from 1979 to 1984. His highest placing in a single race was second, in the January 1981 slalom race in Kitzbühel. In the overall standings he placed 20th in 1981. He competed twice at the FIS World Ski Championships, placing fourth in combined in Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1978 and tenth in slalom in Schladming 1982. He also competed in the slalom and giant slalom at the 1976, 1980 and 1984 Winter Olympics with the best achievement of ninth place in the slalom in 1980. At the 1976 Games he and Alla Askarova were the sole representatives of the Soviet Union in alpine skiing. He retired after the 1984 Olympics to become the head coach of the national team. Francisco Fernández Ochoa
Francisco "Paquito" Fernández Ochoa (25 February 1950 – 6 November 2006) was a World Cup alpine ski racer from Spain. Born in Madrid and raised north of the city in Cercedilla, he was the eldest of eight children whose father ran a ski school. Paquito raced in all of the alpine disciplines and specialized in slalom. At the age of 21, he won an Olympic gold medal in the slalom at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan. He is known for being the first and only Spaniard to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics. Career Fernández Ochoa made his international debut at age 17 at the 1968 Winter Olympics, where he finished 38th in the downhill and giant slalom, and 23rd in the slalom. His first top ten finish on the World Cup circuit was the following season, a sixth-place finish in the slalom at Megève, France, on January 26, 1969. Leonhard Stock
Leonhard Stock (born 14 March 1958) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Austria. Career Stock earned his first World Cup points at age 18 in January 1977. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, Stock was originally an alternate for the downhill, but his fast training times on the course at Whiteface Mountain earned him a spot on the four-man Austrian team. On race day, he was the ninth racer on the course and posted the fastest time to win the gold medal. Stock could not repeat his surprise win at the Lake Placid Olympics on the World Cup tour until almost a decade later, winning downhill races in 1989, 1990, and 1992. At the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, he just missed a second Olympic medal, finishing fourth in the downhill and eighth in the Super-G at Nakiska.
