Alpine Skiing At The 2002 Winter Paralympics – Women's Super-G
Women's super-G skiing events at the 2002 Winter Paralympics were contested at Snowbasin. There were 4 events covering 10 disability classes. Final standings were decided by applying a disability factor to the actual times achieved. Snowbasin
Snowbasin Resort is a ski resort in the western United States, located in Weber County, Utah, northeast of Salt Lake City, on the back (east) side of the Wasatch Range. Opened in 1939, as part of an effort by the city of Ogden to restore the Wheeler Creek watershed, it is one of the oldest continually operating ski resorts in the United States. One of the owners in the early days was Aaron Ross. Over the next fifty years Snowbasin grew, and after a large investment in lifts and snowmaking by owner Earl Holding, Snowbasin hosted the 2002 Winter Olympic alpine skiing races for downhill, combined, and super-G, and is expected to reprise these roles for the 2034 Winter Olympics. Sandy Dukat
Sandra "Sandy" Dukat (born May 3, 1972) is an American Paralympic athlete. Born with proximal femoral focal deficiency, she had her right leg amputated above the knee at the age of four. She has competed internationally in alpine skiing, swimming and triathlon. , she holds the marathon world record for above-knee amputee women. Sporting career Dukat grew up competing in able-bodied sports. She played basketball, high-jumped and was on her high school swim team. When she called the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) looking for an amputee support group, she found out about their sports teams. It was only then that she learned that Paralympic sport existed. Swimming In 1996, Dukat joined the swim team at the RIC. Allison Jones (athlete)
Allison Jones (born May 12, 1984 in Amarillo, Texas) is a Paralympic skier and cyclist for the United States of America. She was born with the birth defect proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), which left her without a right femur. She underwent surgery at age 7 months to amputate her right foot, allowing her to more easily wear a prosthetic leg. She received her first prosthetic leg at 9 months of age. Allison moved from Amarillo, TX to Colorado Springs, CO at age 2 and a half. Education She has a mechanical engineering degree from University of Denver where she received the "Pioneer Award". Career At the 2006 Winter Paralympics she won a gold medal for slalom in the standing category. Sarah Billmeier is an American para-alpine skier. She represented the United States in alpine skiing at the 1992, 1994, 1998 and 2002 Winter Paralympics. In total she won seven gold medals, five silver medals and one bronze medal. She competed in LW2 events for athletes with a single leg amputation above the knee. She lost her left leg above the knee to bone cancer when she was five years old. Amputation is the removal of a Limb (anatomy), limb or other body part by Physical trauma, trauma, medical illness, or surgery. As a surgical measure, it is used to control pain or a disease process in the affected limb, such as cancer, malignancy or gangrene.
