The event was held on February 23 at Deer Valley. Pre-race favorite Bode Miller fell off the course in the second run, and many of the other top competitors struggled with an extremely challenging course. Alain Baxter of Great Britain originally took the bronze, but was disqualified after testing positive for traces of methamphetamine. This apparently occurred because Baxter had used a Vicks inhaler from Canada, which had a slightly different chemical content from the legal British Vicks inhaler. Deer Valley
Deer Valley is a ski-only resort in the Wasatch Range, located east of Salt Lake City, in Park City, Utah, United States where snowboarding is prohibited. Deer Valley was one of the venues for the 2002 Winter Olympics, hosting the freestyle moguls, aerial, and alpine slalom events. It is expected to host the mogul event for the 2034 Winter Olympics but lost out on hosting the slalom event. Deer Valley also regularly hosts competitions for the International Ski Federation for moguls and aerials, but is not steep enough nor does it have long enough terrain to host events such as the GS, Super G, or Downhill. Ole Kristian Furuseth
Ole Kristian Furuseth (born 7 January 1967) is a retired Norwegian alpine skier. He scored his first World Cup victory in Furano in 1989 and his final World Cup victory in Bormio in 2000, and in total he has three World Cup victories in giant slalom and six in slalom. Furuseth won a bronze medal in the slalom competition at the 1991 World Championships in Saalbach, and a silver medal at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano. Thomas Grandi (born 27 December 1972 in Bolzano, Italy) is a Canadian retired alpine skier. He specialized in technical skiing giant slalom and slalom. Skiing career Grandi started in the Alpine Skiing World Cup in the 1992-93 season. His first top ten finish in the World Cup came in December 1996 where he finished in 10th position in the Giant Slalom in Alta Badia, Italy. In the 1997-98 World Cup season, he had his first top three finish when he finished in third place in a Giant Slalom race in Park City. Stanley Hayer (, born July 19, 1973, in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian freestyle skier of Czech descent who currently resides in Kimberley, British Columbia. Stanley Hayer is a member of the Canadian national ski cross team. Hayer moved over to the Czech Republic to ski with their team in the early part of the 2000s after disagreements with the Canadian National program. He would win a silver in the Czech nationals and go on to win a silver in the 2007 FIS World Championships. Erik Schlopy (born August 21, 1972) is former World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States and specialized in the technical events of giant slalom and slalom. Born in Buffalo, New York and raised in nearby Hamburg, Schlopy competed in three Olympics: 1994, 2002, and 2006. In 1994 at Lillehammer, he placed 34th in giant slalom.
