Alpine Skiing At The 1952 Winter Olympics – Women's Downhill
The women's downhill event was part of the alpine skiing at the 1952 Winter Olympics program, and was the second appearance of the event. The competition was held at Norefjell Ski Resort near Krødsherad, Norway, on Sunday, 17 February. Forty-two alpine skiers from 13 nations competed. Austria's Trude Jochum-Beiser won the gold medal, Annemarie Buchner of Germany took the silver, and Giuliana Minuzzo of Italy was the bronze medalist. Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel Ski binding, bindings, unlike other types of skiing (Cross-country skiing, cross-country, Telemark skiing, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Erika Mahringer
Erika "Riki" Mahringer (16 November 1924 – 30 October 2018) was an Austrian alpine skier. Biography She competed in the 1948 and 1952 Winter Olympics. In 1948 she won the bronze medal in the slalom event as well as in the Alpine combined competition. In the downhill contest she finished 19th. Four years later she finished fourth in the 1952 Olympic downhill event. In the same year she finished 17th in the giant slalom competition and 22nd in the slalom contest. Mahringer earned silver medals in the FIS Alpine Skiing World Championships 1950 at Aspen (slalom and downhill), and in the giant slalom she finished fourth. She was a six time Austrian Champion (downhill 1948, 1951, 1952; slalom 1951; giant slalom 1951; Alpine Combined 1951). In 1951, she was named Austrian Sports Personality of the Year. Andrea Mead Lawrence
Andrea Mead Lawrence (April 19, 1932 – March 30, 2009) was an American alpine ski racer and environmentalist. She competed in three Winter Olympics and one additional World Championship (Olympic competitions also counted as the Worlds during that period), and was the first American alpine skier to win two Olympic gold medals. Skiing career Mead was born in Rutland County, Vermont, to an alpine skiing family that owned and operated the Pico Peak ski area. At age 14 she made the national team, and at age 15 competed in the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland, where she placed eighth in the slalom. Two years later, Mead placed sixth in the giant slalom and ninth in the downhill at the 1950 World Championships in Aspen, United States. Celina Seghi (6 March 1920 – 27 July 2022) was an Italian alpine skier. Born in Abetone, Tuscany, she was the youngest child in a family of nine and earned her first Italian championship medal, a bronze in the slalom, in 1934. Biography In 1937 Seghi earned three national titles, her first victories at that level, by winning the slalom, downhill, and combined events. In total she won a total of 25 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze medals at the Italian National Championships: gold seven times, silver thrice, and bronze twice in the downhill, gold and silver once each in the giant slalom, gold ten times, silver twice, and bronze once in the slalom, and gold seven times in the combined.
