Almelo–Salzbergen Railway
The Almelo–Salzbergen railway is a both Dutch and German 54 kilometre long railway line, that connects Almelo with Salzbergen, offering a rail link between the Netherlands and Germany. History The railway was opened by the Spoorweg-Maatschappij Almelo-Salzbergen (''English: Almelo-Salzbergen railway company'') on 18 October 1865, after construction had started in 1862. In Salzbergen the line connected with the Emsland Railway, which had opened in 1855. The Dutch section of the line (Almelo–Oldenzaal) was electrified in 1951 and the remainder of the line was electrified in 1976. From 2006 to 2009 the line through Almelo was the subject of a major project called Almelo Verdiept (''Almelo Lowered''), which moved the railway line through the centre of Almelo into a lowered trench, with sections of tunnels. Route The railway connects Almelo in a south easterly direction with Hengelo. Before Hengelo station the line from Zutphen railway station merges into the route. After the ... Nordhorn
Nordhorn (; Northern Low Saxon: ''Nothoorn'', or ''Notthoarn'', ''Netthoarn,'' and Dutch: ''Noordhoorn'') is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is the district seat of Grafschaft Bentheim, located in the southwest corner of the state, near the border of the Netherlands and North Rhine-Westphalia. Etymology There are several theories about the origin of Nordhorn's name. One possibility is that the name originates from a horn (referred to as the ''Nothorn'', or emergency horn) used by watchmen to warn the inhabitants of Vechteinsel (Vechte Island) if there was an attack. Additionally, the town's location north of Bentheim (now Bad Bentheim) and its castle may have contributed to this name. Another theory suggests that boatmen on the river Vechte used horns to communicate during foggy conditions. A bronze memorial, the ''Tuter'' ("Tooter"), commemorating the origins of inland shipping, was placed in the harbour in the 1970s. A third theory is that Nordhorn originates from a ... Railway Lines In Lower Saxony
Rail transport (also known as train transport) is a means of transport using wheeled vehicles running in tracks, which usually consist of two parallel steel rails. Rail transport is one of the two primary means of land transport, next to road transport. It is used for about 8% of passenger and freight transport globally, thanks to its energy efficiency and potentially high speed.Rolling stock on rails generally encounters lower frictional resistance than rubber-tyred road vehicles, allowing rail cars to be coupled into longer trains. Power is usually provided by diesel or electric locomotives. While railway transport is capital-intensive and less flexible than road transport, it can carry heavy loads of passengers and cargo with greater energy efficiency and safety. Precursors of railways driven by human or animal power have existed since antiquity, but modern rail transport began with the invention of the steam locomotive in the United Kingdom at the beginning of the 19th c ... Sprinter New Generation
The Sprinter New Generation (SNG) is an electric multiple unit train from the Dutch Railways or Nederlandse Spoorwegen. The trains are designed and built by the Spanish train builder Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), who bases the trains on the CAF Civity, Civity platform. With a top speed of , the trains are primarily intended to replace older train equipment (primarily the Urban Regional Material (NS SGMm) and the push-pull double decker DDM-1 carriages), but are also intended for the growth of the number of passengers on the Hoofdrailnet or main rail network. The Sprinter New Generation is characterized by a spacious interior, with much light and space. This is achieved through the use of Jacobs bogies, resulting in wide-body and spacious transitions. The low floor makes the train easier to access for the disabled. History Origins In 1983 the first plans were made for the replacement of NS Mat '64 or Materieel '64 EMUs. NS VIRM
VIRM trains, full name Verlengd InterRegio Materieel (), are a series of electric multiple unit (EMU) double-deck trains operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen or NS (''Dutch Railways''), the principal railway operator in the Netherlands. NS has 178 of these double-deckers – 98 four-carriage sets, and 80 six-carriage sets. The trains were built between 1994 and 2009 – for the most part by Talbot, part of Bombardier Inc., with some railcars built by De Dietrich. The VIRM trains evolved out of the previously existing DD-IRM series (DubbelDeks InterRegio Materieel or ''Double-deck interregional rolling stock''). The first batch of 81 VIRM trains was created by lengthening all the existing DD-IRM combinations by one or two railcars. Three-unit trainsets were augmented by one carriage to transform them into a four-unit VIRM, and the four-unit sets received two more carriages, to create six-unit VIRM trains. Vectron (locomotive)
The Vectron is a locomotive series made by Siemens Mobility, introduced at the 2010 InnoTrans trade fair in four prototype versions: diesel, multi-system, and both AC and DC electric power. The diesel version has been replaced in 2018 by a dual mode locomotive which is powered by electricity on electrified sections of the track and can be switched to diesel mode on non-electrified sections. The Vectron series is reconfigurable and modular, with a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, and is intended as the successor to the EuroSprinter family of locomotives. It can be configured to use any or all of the four electric power systems commonly used in Europe. A more affordable, basic version called Smartron was introduced in 2018. Background and design Around the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century Siemens successfully produced freight and passenger/universal versions of its EuroSprinter locomotive platform; initially made as single voltage machines for European stat ...
