Alice's Adventures Under Ground (opera)
''Alice's Adventures Under Ground'' is a 2016 one-act opera by Gerald Barry to his own libretto, based on Lewis Carroll's 1865 children's book ''Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'' (the original manuscript of which had the title of ''Alice's Adventures Under Ground'') and its 1871 sequel ''Alice Through the Looking-Glass''. First performed in a concert staging at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles on 22 November 2016 (a performance repeated with the same cast and conductor, Thomas Adès, at the Barbican Centre in London a few days later), it received its stage premiere at the Royal Opera House on 3 February 2020. The staging was a joint production by the Royal Opera House, Irish National Opera and Dutch National Opera, and was directed by Antony McDonald. The 54 roles in the opera are sung by a cast of seven. Jabberwocky
"Jabberwocky" is a Nonsense verse, nonsense poem written by Lewis Carroll about the killing of a creature named "the Jabberwock". It was included in his 1871 novel ''Through the Looking-Glass'', the sequel to ''Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'' (1865). The book tells of Alice's adventures within the Parallel universes in fiction, back-to-front world of the Looking-Glass world. In an early scene in which she first encounters the chess piece characters White King (Through the Looking-Glass), White King and White Queen (Through the Looking-Glass), White Queen, Alice finds a book written in a seemingly unintelligible language. Realising that she is travelling through an inverted world, she recognises that the verses on the pages are written in mirror writing. Mark Stone (born 12 June 1969) is a British baritone appearing in concerts, recitals, and opera. Biography Early life Born in London, England, he studied at Wilson's School, Wallington, London, before going up to King's College, Cambridge to read mathematics. After graduating in 1990, he worked as a Chartered Accountant and as an investment banker before studying singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London from 1995 to 1998. Allan Clayton
Allan James Clayton (born 1981) is a British tenor. Clayton studied at the King's School, Worcester as a chorister at Worcester Cathedral, at St John's College, Cambridge as a choral scholar, and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He was a BBC New Generation Artist from 2007-09 and winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society Singer Award in 2018. Clayton was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2021 Birthday Honours for services to opera. Contralto
A contralto () is a classical music, classical female singing human voice, voice whose vocal range is the lowest of their voice type, voice types. A bass is a type of classical male singing voice and has the lowest vocal range of all voice types.
