The Mexican Baseball League (, or LMB, ) is a professional baseball league in Mexico. It is the oldest running professional sports league in the country. The league has 20 teams organized in two divisions, North and South. Teams play 114 games each season. Five teams in each division advance to a four-round postseason tournament that culminates in the Serie del Rey, a best-of-seven championship series between the two division champions. The Mexican League has two affiliated developmental leagues, the Liga Norte de México and Mexican Academy League. Founded in 1925, LMB grew substantially in the immediate post-World War II era thanks to the efforts of Jorge Pasquel, who greatly increased the quality and visibility of the league by luring players from Major League Baseball (MLB). Horacio De La Vega
Horacio de la Vega Flores (born 3 June 1975) is a Mexican former modern pentathlon, modern pentathlete and sports administrator who has served as Executive President of the Mexican League. Career De la Vega was modern pentathlon world champion in 1995 and 1998, and competed at the Olympic Games in 1996 Summer Olympics, 1996 and the 2000 Summer Olympics, 2000, where he ranked 23rd and 22nd respectively. De la Vega began his professional career in the Mexican Army. Later he worked in various sports administration roles in Mexico City. He played a part in the organising of the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, and acted as an advisor for the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima. In November 2019, De la Vega became president of the Mexican League, Mexican Baseball League (LMB). In September 2023, he was selected for another five year term as president of the LMB. Major League Baseball
Major League Baseball (MLB) is a professional baseball league composed of 30 teams, divided equally between the National League (baseball), National League (NL) and the American League (AL), with 29 in the United States and 1 in Canada. Jorge Pasquel
Jorge Pasquel Casanueva (April 23, 1907 - March 7, 1955) was a Mexican businessman and baseball executive. He was president of the Mexican League and owned interests in several teams at a time when the league recruited from Negro league baseball and Major League Baseball, creating a big threat to the Major League talent level. Jorge Pasquel brought racial integration to professional baseball and had a big role when Jackie Robinson debuted in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Pasquel died in a plane crash in 1955. The Mexican Academy League, or the Academia Liga Mexicana de Beisbol, is a professional minor baseball league sanctioned by the Mexican League. The Academy League was founded as a feeder league to the Mexican League. It is composed of eight teams, each of which is affiliated with two Mexican League teams. The Serie del Rey () is the annual championship series of the Mexican Baseball League (LMB), held since . The champions from the league's two divisions, the North and South Zones, compete in a best-of-seven series, with the winner being awarded the Copa de Zaachila. Originally known simply as the Serie Final, the championship series was renamed in 2012, in reference to baseball being called the king of sports. Before 1970, the league champion was the winner of the most games in a round robin tournament (similar to the National and American Leagues of Major League Baseball before the introduction of the League Championship Series).
