Alfa Romeo V6 Engine
The Alfa Romeo V6 engine (also called the Busso V6) is a 60° V6 engine made by Alfa Romeo from 1979 to 2005. It was developed in the early 1970s by Giuseppe Busso, and first used on the Alfa 6 with a displacement of and a SOHC 12-valve cylinder head. Later versions ranged from and had DOHC 24-valve valvetrains. The original design had short pushrods for the exhaust valves in a design similar to earlier Lancia Fulvia engines. The first DOHC version was in the 1993 Alfa Romeo 164, with an aluminium alloy engine block and head with sodium filled exhaust valves. The Alfa Romeo V6 has been used in kit cars like the Ultima GTR, Hawk HF Series, and DAX, as well as the Gillet Vertigo sports car and the Lancia Aurelia B20GT Outlaw. Giuseppe Busso
Giuseppe Busso (Turin, April 27, 1913 – Arese, January 3, 2006) was an Italian mechanical and engine designer mostly known for his tenure at Alfa Romeo and Ferrari. Biography Busso was born in Turin. After graduating in Industrial Design at the Polytechnic University of Turin, in 1937 he began working for Fiat's aviation engine department. In January 1939 he moved to Alfa Romeo where he worked under the guidance of Orazio Satta Puliga. His main responsibility was racing car engines. In 1946 he became technical director for Ferrari and thus took part in the development of the Ferrari Colombo V12 engine. Busso returned to Alfa Romeo in 1948 and worked there until 1977. He was in charge of mechanical engineering for Alfa Romeo road cars, taking part in the creation of the Alfa Romeo 1900, Giulietta, Giulia, 1750, 2000 and Alfetta. An aluminium alloy ( UK/IUPAC) or aluminum alloy ( NA; see spelling differences) is an alloy in which aluminium (Al) is the predominant metal. The typical alloying elements are copper, magnesium, manganese, silicon, tin, nickel and zinc. There are two principal classifications, namely casting alloys and wrought alloys, both of which are further subdivided into the categories heat-treatable and non-heat-treatable. The Alfa Romeo 164 (Type 164) is a four-door executive saloon manufactured and marketed by Italian automaker Alfa Romeo from 1987 to 1998, styled by Pininfarina, and cooperatively designed and sharing platforms and numerous elements with the Fiat Croma, Saab 9000 and Lancia Thema. The 164 succeeded the Alfa Romeo 90 and Alfa 6. The 164 was followed by the 166 in 1998, after a combined production total of 273,857 units. Italian automobile company Lancia was the first to manufacture cars with V4 engine, V4 and V6 engine, V6 engines in series-production. This started with a number of V4-engine families, that were produced from the 1920s through 1970s. A poppet valve (also sometimes called mushroom valve) is a valve typically used to control the timing and quantity of petrol (gas) or vapour flow into or out of an engine, but with many other applications. It consists of a hole or open-ended chamber, usually round or oval in cross-section, and a plug, usually a disk shape on the end of a shaft known as a valve stem. The working end of this plug, the valve face, is typically ground at a 45° bevel to seal against a corresponding valve seat ground into the rim of the chamber being sealed. The shaft travels through a valve guide to maintain its alignment. A pressure differential on either side of the valve can assist or impair its performance. A valvetrain is a mechanical system that controls the operation of the intake and exhaust valves in an internal combustion engine.
