Alexandrina Octavia Maria Dawson-Damer, Countess of Portarlington ( Lady Alexandrina Octavia Maria Vane; 29 July 1823 – 15 January 1874) was an Irish aristocrat who was the wife of Henry Dawson-Damer, 3rd Earl of Portarlington and the daughter of Charles Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. Early life Lady Alexandrina, who went by "Aline", was born on 29 July 1823 and was a godchild of Alexander I of Russia. She was the second daughter of Anglo-Irish people, Anglo-Irish nobleman Charles Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, and, his second wife, Frances Vane, Marchioness of Londonderry, Frances Anne Emily Vane-Tempest. Sir Henry Vane-Tempest, 2nd Baronet (25 January 1771 – 1 August 1813) was a British politician. In early life his name was Henry Vane. He changed his name to Vane-Tempest when he inherited from his uncle John Tempest, Jr., in 1793. Early life He was the only son, and heir, of the former Frances Tempest and the Rev. Emo Court, located near the village of Emo, County Laois, Emo in County Laois, Republic of Ireland, Ireland, is a large Neoclassical architecture, neo-classical mansion. Architectural features of the building include sash-style windows, pavilions, a Baluster, balustrade, a hipped roof, and large dome. It was designed by the architect James Gandon in 1790 for John Dawson, the first Earl of Portarlington. It is one of the few houses to have been designed by Gandon. Other buildings by Gandon include the The Custom House, Custom House and Kings Inns in Dublin. While construction commenced in the 1790s, the first Earl died in 1798, and work was not completed until the tenure of the third Earl of Portarlington in the 1860s. This is a list of representative peers elected from the Peerage of Ireland to sit in the British House of Lords after the Kingdom of Ireland was brought into union with the Kingdom of Great Britain. No new members were added to the House after 1919, due to the creation of the Irish Free State, however, the already sitting members continued to remain part of the House, with the last member dying in 1961. Once elected, peers held their seats for life. Some of these peers were granted a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom which gave them a hereditary seat in the House of Lords. Earl of Portarlington is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1785 for John Dawson, 2nd Viscount Carlow, who had earlier represented Portarlington in the Irish House of Commons. He was the son of William Dawson, 1st Viscount Carlow, who had represented Portarlington and Queen's County in the Irish House of Commons, and had been created Baron Dawson, of Dawson's Court in the Queen's County, in 1770, and Viscount Carlow, in the County of Carlow, in 1776. Colonel John Dawson, 2nd Earl of Portarlington (26February 178128December 1845) was a British Army officer who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. Family He was the son of John Dawson, 1st Earl of Portarlington (1744–1798) who had been created Earl of Portarlington in 1785. His mother was Lady Caroline Stuart (before 1763–1813) the fifth daughter of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. Career He began his career as an ensign in the 20th Foot in March 1798 and was promoted to Lieutenant in December of the same year. On 24March 1800 he was promoted to captain in the 46th Foot before transferring to the 23rd Light Dragoons. After a spell as a major in the 4th Garrison Battalion and as a lieutenant colonel in the 10th Foot he returned to the 23rd Dragoons on 6April 1809. Simon Luttrell, 1st Earl of Carhampton ( – 14 January 1787) was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1754 to 1780. Biography He was the second son of Henry Luttrell, of Luttrellstown (whose family had held Luttrellstown since the land there had been granted to Sir Geoffrey de Luterel in about 1210 by King John of England) and his wife Elizabeth Jones. His father had been a noted commander in the Jacobite Irish Army between 1689 and 1691. He later received a pardon from the Williamite authorities and was accused by his former Jacobite comrades of having betrayed them. He was murdered when his sedan chair was attacked in Dublin in 1717.
