Alan Smith (born 3 September 1949) is a Welsh former professional footballer. A midfielder, he progressed through the youth team at Newport County A.F.C., Newport County and made his debut in 1966. He went on to make 100 English Football League appearances for Newport scoring 6 goals. In 1972, he joined Merthyr Tydfil. Newport ( cy, Casnewydd; ) is a city and county borough in Wales, situated on the River Usk close to its confluence with the Severn Estuary, northeast of Cardiff. With a population of 145,700 at the 2011 census, Newport is the third-largest authority with city status in Wales, and seventh most populous overall. The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. It was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League.
