Al-Talaba
Al-Talaba Sports Club () is an Iraqi professional sports club based in Al-Rusafa, Baghdad. Its football team competes in the Iraq Stars League, the top flight of Iraqi football. Founded in 1969, the club was named Al-Jamiea but became known as Al-Talaba ahead of the 1978–79 season after being merged with a new club of the same name. Their home stadium is Al-Talaba Stadium. Al-Talaba are one of Iraq's most successful teams having won five league titles, most recently in the 2001–02 season. They have also achieved two FA Cups, one Super Cup and a joint-record three Baghdad Championships. The club's best achievements on the continental stage include finishing fourth at the 1986 Asian Club Championship and finishing second and fourth at the 1995 and 1998–99 editions of the Asian Cup Winners' Cup respectively. Baghdad Championship
The Baghdad Championship (), formerly known as the Umm al-Ma'arik Championship (), was an annual football competition in men's domestic Iraqi football that was usually held at the beginning of each season. It was founded in the 1991–92 season, and its last edition was in the 2003–04 season. The top eight teams of the previous Iraqi Premier League season entered the competition, with the exception of the first and third editions, where the top six teams of the league entered. The teams were split into two groups, and the top two teams from each group advanced to the semi-finals. The winners would contest the final, and the losers would play for third place. All of the competition's matches were played in Baghdad. The tournament was one of the four major domestic trophies attainable by top-flight teams at the time, alongside the league championship, the Iraq FA Cup and the Iraqi Super Cup. It is governed by the Iraqi Pro League Association. The league was formed by the Iraq Football Association in 1974 as the Iraqi National Clubs League, the first nationwide league of clubs in Iraq, and later became known as the Iraqi Premier League. In 2023, the competition was rebranded as the Iraq Stars League and transitioned into a fully professional competition. Iraq FA Cup
The Iraq Cup (), commonly known as the Iraq FA Cup, is an annual Single-elimination tournament, knockout association football, football competition in men's domestic Football in Iraq, Iraqi football organised by the Iraq Football Association. First held in the 1948–49 season for clubs and institutions, it returned in the 1975–76 season as a clubs-only competition. The tournament usually begins with several rounds played between lower division clubs, twelve of which advance to the Round of 32, where the Iraq Stars League clubs are entered. This is followed by the Round of 16, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the final which is played as a single leg in Baghdad. The winners of the competition are awarded a place in the next season's AFC Champions League Two group stage. The 2001–02 Iraqi Elite League kicked off on 22 September 2001 and ended on 17 May 2002. Al-Talaba won their fifth league title, finishing six points ahead of Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya and eleven ahead of Al-Shorta. 1986 Asian Club Championship
The 1986 Asian Club Championship was the 6th edition of the annual Asian club football competition hosted by Asian Football Confederation. Several Asian clubs started the qualifying round in Fall of 1986. The final round was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in December 1986. Furukawa Electric defeated Al Hilal in the final to become the first Japanese club to win the Asian Club Championship. 2023–24 Iraq Stars League
The 2023–24 Iraq Stars League was the 50th season of the highest tier football league in Iraq since its establishment in 1974, and the first season since launching as a professional league under the name Iraq Stars League. The season started on 26 October 2023 and ended on 14 July 2024, with the post-season play-offs held from 19–24 July 2024. Al-Shorta won the league title for the third season in a row, sealing the title in the penultimate round of the season by defeating Duhok 1–0. Al-Shorta also won the Iraq FA Cup title to secure the double. Iraqi Super Cup
The Iraqi Super Cup (), previously called Iraqi Perseverance Cup (), is a super cup tournament in Iraqi football. Founded in 1986 as a two-team competition, the current version has been contested since 2025 by six teams: the top four teams from the Iraq Stars League and the winners and runners-up of the Iraq FA Cup. The six teams are split into two groups, with the group winners facing each other in the final and the group runners-up competing in a third place play-off. Al-Zawraa are the most successful club with five titles. The current holders are Al-Shorta, who defeated Al-Karkh 1–0 in the 2022 final. Jamal Salih
Jamal Salih Hassan () is a former Iraq national football player and coach, and currently as a sports director for Sharjah FC, and has been in the role since March 2018. Career He began his career as a player with Al-Omma Sports Club. He helped guide Al-Jamiea (merged with Al-Talaba in 1978) to the top division in 1970 with the likes of Qusai Abdul-Sattar and Shamil Kamil, and became head coach of the club in 1974. He went on to coach Al-Rasheed, Al-Nafat, the Iraqi army national side and several clubs in Libya and the UAE. Later on, he worked as a pundit for Dubai Sports channel for their Bundesliga matches. On March 4 of 2018, Doctor Jamal Salih was appointed as the sports director of Sharjah FC, and also Salih was responsible for the sports activities in the club. The 1978–79 Iraqi National Clubs League (First Division) was the 5th season of the competition since its foundation in 1974.
