Al-Qa'im District () is a district in Al Anbar Governorate, Iraq, on the border with Syria. It is centred on the town of Al-Qa'im. The Euphrates river flows through it. Governorates Of Iraq
Iraq consists of 19 governorates (; ), also known as "provinces". Per the Iraqi constitution, governorates can form a Federal regions of Iraq, federal region. Four governorates, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Halabja and Duhok, constitute the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region. Baghdad Governorate, Baghdad (which is the most populous) and Basra Governorate, Basra are the oldest governorates. The second most-populous one, Nineveh Governorate, Ninawa (or Nineveh) is in the upland region and has a cooler climate of the north-west. Al Anbar Governorate
Al Anbar Governorate (; ''muḥāfaẓat al-’Anbār''), or Anbar Province, is the largest governorate in Iraq by area. Encompassing much of the country's western territory, it shares borders with Syria, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. The population is mostly Sunni Arabs. The provincial capital is Ramadi; other important cities include Fallujah, Al-Qa'im and Haditha. The governorate was known as Ramadi up to 1976 when it was renamed Al Anbar Province, and it was known as ''Dulaim'' before 1962. A large majority of the inhabitants of the province are Arab Sunni Muslims and most belong to the Dulaim tribe. Al-Qa'im (town)
Al-Qa'im () is an Iraqi border town located nearly 400 km (248 mi) northwest of Baghdad near the Syrian border and situated along the Euphrates River, and located in the Al Anbar Governorate. It has a population of about 74,100 and it's the center of the Al-Qa'im District. The Al-Qa'im border crossing connects Al-Qaim to close city Abu Kamal in Syria. Pre-war history In the early 20th century, there was a ''khan'' (caravanserai) and police station in Al-Qa'im, but no village. The ''khan'' was built in 1907 and was the residence of a local administrator. The surrounding area was inhabited by Bedouin Arabs from the Karablah and Jara'if tribes. Iraq War In the Iraq War, Qa'im was a center of attacks by the Iraqi insurgents against US military personnel at the nearby military base of Camp Gannon. Al-Qa'im Border Crossing
Al-Qa'im border crossing () between Syria and Iraq is one of the major supply routes across the Middle East. It connects the town of Abu Kamal in Syria's Deir ez-Zor Governorate to the city of Husaybah, in the Al-Qa'im District of Iraq's Anbar Governorate. The border crossing is about 450 km from Syria's capital Damascus and 340 km from the Iraqi capital Baghdad. On 30 September 2019, Iraq reopened the border crossing after eight years of closure due to Syrian Civil War and Iraqi Civil War. In December 2024, after new offensives by rebels, over 1,500 Syrian government soldiers crossed the border into Al-Qa'im, and surrendered to Iraqi forces. Abu Kamal
Abu Kamal (), also known as Al-Bukamal (), is a city in eastern Syria located on the Euphrates river in the Deir ez-Zor Governorate and near the border with Iraq. It is the administrative centre of the Abu Kamal District and the local subdistrict (Abu Kamal Subdistrict). Just to the south-east is the Al-Qa'im border crossing to the town of Husaybah in the Al-Qa'im District of Iraq's Al Anbar Governorate. Etymology When part of the Ottoman Empire, Abu Kamal was called ''kışla'', pronounced locally as "qashla", which is a Turkish word for "military barracks". This name "Qashla" is still used by some inhabitants of the area, especially by elderly villagers.
