Governorates Of Iraq
Iraq consists of 19 governorates (; ), also known as "provinces". Per the Iraqi constitution, governorates can form a Federal regions of Iraq, federal region. Four governorates, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Halabja and Duhok, constitute the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region. Baghdad Governorate, Baghdad (which is the most populous) and Basra Governorate, Basra are the oldest governorates. The second most-populous one, Nineveh Governorate, Ninawa (or Nineveh) is in the upland region and has a cooler climate of the north-west. There have been numerous calls to recognize Halabja Governorate since 1999. Wasit Governorate
Wasit Governorate () is a governorate in eastern Iraq, south-east of Baghdad and bordering Iran. Prior to 1976 it was known as Kut Province. Major cities include the capital Al-Kut, Al-Hai and Al-Suwaira. The governorate contains the Mesopotamian Marshes of Shuwayja, Al-Attariyah, and Hor Aldelmj. Its name comes from the Arabic word meaning "middle", as the former city of Wasit lay along the Tigris about midway between Baghdad and Basra. Wasit city was abandoned after the Tigris shifted course. History The ancient Sumerian city-state of Der is located near the town of Badra. The governorate experienced heavy fighting in the Iran–Iraq War, specifically the Battle of the Marshes. An-Nu'mānīyah () is a city on the Tigris river in Iraq, located roughly southeast of Baghdad in the Wasit Province. It is the site of one of four national training centers for the Iraqi Army. It is also the site of a base that was built by the Hussein regime and constructed by Yugoslavian contractors Mostogradnja. Following the beginning of the Iraq War, it changed its purpose September 1, 2004 to operate as a training base for new recruits and serve as the home station for three battalions of the Iraqi Intervention Force – the Iraqi army's counterinsurgency wing. History An-Nu'maniyah is named after al-Nu'man III ibn al-Mundhir who ruled the region. The city hosts the tomb of Al-Mutanabbi. Nu'maniyah was an important town during the Middle Ages. Al-Ahrar Subdistrict
Al-Ahrar () is a subdistrict of the An Numaniyah district in the Wasit Governorate of Iraq, on the west bank of the Tigris. Its seat is the town of the Ahrar. The subdistrict was established in 1961, and covers 1244 square km. Farming is the main occupation in Al-Ahrar subdistrict due to irrigated alluvial soil. It is famous for production of wheat, rice and date palm. Ahdab oil field Ahdab oil field lies in a 303 square km in Al-Ahrar subdistrict. Iraqi's official sources estimated the oilfield's reserves 1 billion barrel. A contract to develop Ahdab oil field was signed between Saddam Hussein's regime and CNPC in 1996, but the deal delayed after UN imposed sanctions and postponed further by the Iraq War. The work commenced in 2008 and the production begun 2011 with 60,000 barrels per day, increasing to 140,000 barrel the next year.
