Adlai Ewing Stevenson (October 23, 1835 – June 14, 1914) was an American politician and diplomat who served as the 23rd vice president of the United States from 1893 to 1897 under President Grover Cleveland. A member of the History of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, Stevenson served as a U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Representative for Illinois in the late 1870s and early 1880s. He was the founder of the Stevenson political family. Appointed assistant United States Postmaster General, postmaster general of the United States in 1885, during First presidency of Grover Cleveland, Cleveland's first administration, Stevenson fired many Republican postal workers and replaced them with Southern Democrats. Adlai Ewing Stevenson II (; February 5, 1900 – July 14, 1965) was an American politician and diplomat who was the United States ambassador to the United Nations from 1961 until his death in 1965. He previously served as the 31st governor of Illinois from 1949 to 1953 and was the Democratic nominee for president of the United States in 1952 and 1956, losing both elections to Dwight D. Eisenhower in landslides. Stevenson was the grandson of Adlai Stevenson, the 23rd vice president of the United States. He was raised in Bloomington, Illinois, and was a member of the Democratic Party.
