A Mother's Love (1950 Film)
is a 1950 Japanese drama film directed by Hiroshi Shimizu. Plot Toshiko, mother of three children, all from different fathers, travels from Tokyo to the countryside to give them into foster care, as they get in the way to her occupation as a bar owner. After her daughter has been taken in by her brother Gentaro, himself father of eight children, and her younger son by her uncle Yokogawa, she heads for the home of her former nurse Oseki, who now runs a tea house in the mountains. On the way, Toshiko meets an elderly woman who looks after her grandchild, as her daughter, the child's mother and member of a troupe of travelling actors, refuses to give it away even under difficult circumstances. She resides at an inn with her elder son Fusao, where she falls ill and moves into a room with painter Takuoka as the inn is booked out. Hiroshi Shimizu (director)
was a Japanese film director, who directed over 160 films during his career. Biography Early years Shimizu was born in Shizuoka Prefecture and attended Hokkaidō University, but left before graduating. He joined the Shochiku film studio in Tokyo in 1921, making his directorial debut in 1924 at the age of just 21. Career Shimizu specialised in melodramas and comedies. In his most distinguished silent films like '' Fue no Shiratama'' (1929) and '' Japanese Girls at the Harbor'' (1933), he explored a Japan poised between native and Western ideas, traditionalism and liberalism, while stylistically relying on modernist and avant-garde techniques. The majority of his silent films are now considered lost. In the 1930s, Shimizu increasingly took advantage of shooting on location and with non-professional actors, and was praised at the time by film critics such as Matsuo Kishi and fellow directors as Kenji Mizoguchi. Kumeko Urabe
Kumeko Urabe (), born , (October 5, 1902 – October 26, 1989) was a Japanese movie actress, one of the first in Empire of Japan, the country. She worked on stage and in film and television. Urabe was born in a rural part of Shizuoka Prefecture. She lived in several homes while growing up, as she relocated with her father, a Buddhist priest, among the temples to which he was assigned. Urabe completed her education in Numazu, and left school in 1919 to join a theatre company, touring under various stage names as an actor and dancer. In 1923, Urabe auditioned at the film studio Nikkatsu, and adopted the name Kumeko Urabe, by which she was known for the rest of her life. She appeared in her first film the following year, and continued to act until 1987. The Austrian Film Museum (German: Österreichisches Filmmuseum) is a film archive and museum located in Vienna, Austria. It was founded by and Peter Kubelka in 1964 as a non-profit organization. Isuzu Yamada
was a Japanese stage and screen actress whose career spanned seven decades. Biography Yamada was born in Osaka as Mitsu Yamada, the daughter of Kusudu Yamada, a shinpa actor specialising in onnagata roles, and Ritsu, a geisha. Under her mother's influence, she began learning nagauta and Japanese traditional dance from the age of six. Yamada debuted as a film actress in 1930 at age twelve, appearing in the Nikkatsu film ''Tsurugi wo koete'' opposite Denjirō Ōkōchi. Matsuo Kishi
(18 September 1906 – 17 August 1985) was a Japanese film critic, director, screenwriter, producer, and biographer. His real name was Aji Shūichirō. Born in Tokyo, he became interested in film from his days in high school and, continuing on to Keio University, began submitting reviews to magazines such as ''Kinema Junpo'' and editing theater programs. Starting a dōjinshi ''Eiga kaihō'' with Tsuneo Hazumi, Kishi became involved in the left-wing film movement of the late 1920s, eventually becoming a member of the Proletarian Film League of Japan (Prokino). He soon left out of dissatisfaction with such a political approach to film. In 1932, he became the first critic to champion the work of Sadao Yamanaka, and later was a strong supporter of the films of Hiroshi Shimizu.
