A Hard Day's Night (film)
''A Hard Day's Night'' is a 1964 musical comedy film starring the English rock band the Beatles – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr – that was released during the height of Beatlemania. Directed by Richard Lester, it was written by Alun Owen and originally released by United Artists. The musical soundtrack makes up the band's album of the same name. The film portrays 36 hours in the lives of the group as they prepare for a television performance. The film was a commercial and critical success and was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay. Richard Lester
Richard Lester Liebman (born January 19, 1932) is an American retired film director, who spent the majority of his professional life in the United Kingdom. He is known for the fast-paced, flamboyant directing he brought to his comedy films, most notably the Beatles' vehicles ''A Hard Day's Night (film), A Hard Day's Night'' (1964) and ''Help! (film), Help!'' (1965), and ''The Knack ...and How to Get It'' (1965). Originally from Philadelphia, Lester began his career directing television, moving to the United Kingdom in the mid-1950s. John Lennon
John Winston Ono Lennon (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 19408 December 1980) was an English singer-songwriter, musician and activist. He gained global fame as the founder, co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles. Lennon's Lennon–McCartney, songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney remains the most successful in history. Born in Liverpool, Lennon became involved in the Skiffle revival, skiffle craze as a teenager. In 1956, he formed the Quarrymen, which evolved into the Beatles in 1960. Ferry Cross The Mersey (film)
''Ferry Cross the Mersey'' is a 1964 British musical film directed by Jeremy Summers and starring Gerry and the Pacemakers. It was written by David Franden from a story by Tony Warren. The film tells the story of a group of art students as they humorously try to navigate the Liverpool beat scene. After the group enters a music competition, their instruments are misplaced but are ultimately found in time for them to take the stage and win the contest. It is frequently considered to be Gerry and the Pacemakers' version of the Beatles' ''A Hard Day's Night''. Gerry And The Pacemakers
Gerry and the Pacemakers were an English beat group prominent in the 1960s Merseybeat scene. In common with the Beatles, they came from Liverpool, were managed by Brian Epstein and recorded by George Martin. Their early successes helped make popular the Merseybeat sound and launch the wider British beat boom of the mid-1960s They were the first act to reach number one in the UK Singles Chart with its first three single releases: " How Do You Do It?", " I Like It" and "You'll Never Walk Alone". This record was not equalled for 20 years, until the mid-1980s success of fellow Liverpool band Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Another of their most famous songs, " Ferry Cross the Mersey", refers to the River Mersey, which flows past Liverpool and was the title song for the film of the same name. ''The Monkees'' is an American television musical film, musical sitcom that first aired on NBC for two seasons, from September 12, 1966, to March 25, 1968. The series follows the adventures of four young men (The Monkees) trying to make a name for themselves as a rock 'n roll band. Robert James Leslie Halliwell (23 February 1929 – 21 January 1989) was a British film critic, encyclopaedist and television rights buyer for ITV, the British commercial network, and Channel 4. The Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay is the Academy Award (also known as an Oscar) for the best screenplay not based upon previously published material. It was created in 1940 as a separate writing award from the Academy Award for Best Story. Beginning with the Oscars for 1957, the two categories were combined to honor only the screenplay. ''A Hard Day's Night'' is the third studio album by the English Rock music, rock band the Beatles, released on 10 July 1964 by Parlophone, with side one containing songs from the soundtrack to their A Hard Day's Night (film), film of the same name. The American version of the album was released two weeks earlier, on 26 June 1964 by United Artists Records, with a different track listing including some from George Martin's film score.
