2022 Willoughby State By-election
A by-election was held in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly seat of Electoral district of Willoughby, Willoughby on 12 February 2022, caused by the resignation of Premier of New South Wales and Liberal Party of Australia, Liberal MP Gladys Berejiklian. The Willoughby by-election was held on the same day as by-elections for the districts of 2022 Bega state by-election, Bega, 2022 Monaro state by-election, Monaro and 2022 Strathfield state by-election, Strathfield. The writs for election were issued on 21 January 2022. Nominations for candidates closed seven days later at noon on 27 January, with the ballot paper draw commencing in the morning of 28 January. The NSW Electoral Commission pre-emptively sent postal ballots to all voters registered on the state electoral roll for the relevant districts, under a regulation in a COVID amendment to the Electoral Act. It was previously represented by Gladys Berejiklian of the Liberal Party, who announced on 1 October 2021 that she would resign from the Legislative Assembly and as Premier of New South Wales. She was replaced at the 2022 Willoughby state by-election on 12 February 2022 by Liberal Tim James. History Willoughby was an electoral district of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, first created in 1894 with the abolition of multi-member electoral districts from part of St Leonards, and named after and including the Sydney suburb of Willoughby. The Sustainable Australia Party (officially registered as Sustainable Australia Party – Stop Overdevelopment / Corruption), formerly the Sustainable Population Party, is an Australian political party. The Reason Party is an Australian political party founded in 2017. Its leader, Fiona Patten, describes the party as a " civil libertarian alternative". Patten was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council as at the 2018 state election in the Northern Metropolitan Region, after formerly being elected as a Sex Party member for the same seat in the 2014 state election. The City of Willoughby is a local government area on the Lower North Shore of Northern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located north of the Sydney central business district.
