2022 Portland, Oregon City Commission Election
The 2022 Portland City Commission elections were held on May 17, 2022, and November 8, 2022. 2 positions are up for election. Position 2 and Position 3 are held by Dan Ryan and Jo Ann Hardesty respectively who have both running for re-election. Portland has no term-limits on officeholders. Position 2 Incumbent Dan Ryan has filed for re-election. Four other candidates have also filed to run for the seat and two additional candidates have filed but since withdrawn from the race. Government Of Portland, Oregon
The Government of Portland, Oregon is based on a city commission government system. Elected officials include the mayor, commissioners, and a city auditor. The mayor and commissioners (members of City Council) are responsible for legislative policy and oversee the various bureaus that oversee the day-to-day operation of the city. Portland began using a commission form of government in 1913 following a public vote on May 3 of that year. Each elected official serves a four-year term, without term limits. Each city council member is elected at-large. In 2022, Portland residents approved a ballot measure to replace the commission form of government with a 12-member council elected in four districts using single transferable vote, with a professional city manager appointed by a directly-elected mayor, with the first elections to be held in 2024. Dan Ryan (Oregon Politician)
Dan Ryan (born June 21, 1962) is an American non-profit executive and politician who was elected to the Portland City Council on August 12, 2020. Ryan defeated Multnomah County Commissioner Loretta Smith in a runoff election to succeed Nick Fish, who died of stomach cancer on January 2, 2020. Ryan will serve for the remainder of Fish's term, which ends in 2022. Early life and education Ryan was born in North Portland, Oregon, the youngest of eight children. Ryan was the first in his family to graduate from college. Ryan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oregon and took graduate courses at The New School. Career Prior to announcing his candidacy for Portland City Council, Ryan worked as an administrator at Portland State University, where he managed the school's first capital campaign. Jo Ann Hardesty
Jo Ann A. Hardesty (formely Bowman, born October 15, 1957) is an American Democratic politician in the U.S. state of Oregon who served as a Portland City commissioner from 2019 to 2022. She previously served in the Oregon House of Representatives from 1995 until 2001. Hardesty was the first African American woman and first woman of color to serve on the council. A longtime activist for racial justice and other progressive policy issues, she is well known as an advocate for police reform and defunding. In 2021, Portland Police Bureau's internal investigation concluded their officers leaked a false accusation that she was responsible for a hit and run in an act of retaliation. Hardesty faced several controversies during her tenure in office, such as her handling of personal credit card debt, vacation time, and placing a call to 9-1-1 over a dispute with a Lyft driver. Rene Gonzalez is an American attorney, entrepreneur, and Democratic politician. He challenged Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty for her seat during the 2022 Portland, Oregon City Commission election, running on a platform that emphasized law-and-order and livability. He won the race with 52.6% of the vote, and took office in January 2023. Early life and career Gonzalez was raised in Anchorage, Alaska, where his father worked as a trial judge and federal prosecutor.
