2020 Hawaii Senate Election
The 2020 Hawaii Senate elections are taking place as part of the biennial 2020 United States elections. Hawaii voters will elect state senators in 13 of the state's 25 senate districts. The primary elections on August 8, 2020, determined which candidates will appear on the November 3, 2020, general election ballot. Following the previous election in 2018, Democrats had control of the Hawaii Senate with 24 seats to Republicans' 1 seat. Hawaii Senate
The Hawaii Senate is the upper house of the Hawaii State Legislature. It consists of twenty-five members elected from an equal number of constituent districts across the islands and is led by the President of the Senate, elected from the membership of the body, currently Ron Kouchi. The forerunner of the Hawaii Senate during the government of the Kingdom of Hawaii was the House of Nobles originated in 1840. In 1894, the Constitution of the Republic of Hawaii renamed the upper house the present senate. Senators are elected to four-year terms and are not subject to term limits. Like most state legislatures in the United States, the Hawaii State Senate is a part-time body and senators often have active careers outside government. The lower house of the legislature is the Hawaii House of Representatives. Donovan M. Dela Cruz (born July 6, 1973, in Wahiawa, Hawaii) is an American politician and a Democratic member of the Hawaii Senate since November 2, 2010, representing District 17 since 2022 and previously representing the same area as District 22 from 2010 to 2022. Breene Harimoto
Breene Harimoto (May 6, 1954 – June 18, 2020) was an American politician who served in the Hawaii Senate from the 16th district from 2015 to 2020. He served on the Honolulu City Council from the 8th district from 2011 to 2014. Career Harimoto was appointed to the Hawaii Board of Education in May 2002 by Governor Ben Cayetano. He served on that board until his resignation in June 2010, and briefly served as the board chair.
