2020 French Senate Election
Senatorial elections were held on 27 September 2020 to pick 172 of the 348 seats in the Senate of the French Fifth Republic. The elections were a modest victory for the centre-right Republicans. The environmentalist Europe Ecology – The Greens party entered the upper chamber, while Emmanuel Macron's centrist La République En Marche! party maintained their position, despite losses in the 2020 French municipal elections earlier in the year. Senate (France)
The Senate (french: Sénat, ) is the upper house of the French Parliament, with the lower house being the National Assembly, the two houses constituting the legislature of France. The French Senate is made up of 348 senators (''sénateurs'' and ''sénatrices'') elected by part of the country's local councillors (in indirect elections), as well as by representatives of French citizens living abroad. Senators have six-year terms, with half of the seats up for election every three years. The Senate enjoys less prominence than the first, or lower house, the National Assembly, which is elected on direct universal ballot and upon the majority of which the Government has to rely: in case of disagreement, the Assembly can in many cases have the last word, although the Senate keeps a role in some key procedures, such as constitutional amendments and most importantly legislation about itself. Ecologist Group (Senate)
The ecologist group (french: groupe écologiste) is a parliamentary group in the French Senate. Its first formation was from 11 January 2012 to 29 June 2017 that included representatives of Europe Ecology – The Greens (EELV). It was recreated on 29 September 2020. History The number of senators of Europe Ecology – The Greens (EELV) increased from 4 to 10 following the 2011 renewal in which the left took control of the Senate for the first time in the history of the Fifth Republic. Fifteen senators were then required for the formation of a group in the Senate; the threshold was lowered to 10 as a result of an earlier agreement between EELV and the Socialist Party (PS). Guillaume Gontard (born 11 March 1971) is a French politician who is president of the Ecologist group in the French Senate. Political career Guillaume Gontard was born on March 11, 1971 in Tours (Indre-et-Loire). His family moved to the village of Percy (Isère) in the Trièves (country of his ancestors) when he was 4 years old. He began his schooling in a single class at the municipal school of Le Monestier-du-Percy, he continued his studies at the college of Mens then at the Lycée Stendhal in Grenoble. Claude Malhuret (born 8 March 1950) is a French physician and politician of Agir who has been a member of the Senate since 2014, representing the department of Allier. Previously, Malhuret was the mayor of Vichy, France (1989–2017), a member of the National Assembly (1993–1997) and of the European Parliament (1989–1993). Early life and career Malhuret was born in Strasbourg. After completing his doctorate in medicine at the University of Paris, he worked as a hospital intern. In 1973, Malhuret participated in some voluntary overseas work with Coopération Française, before being employed by the World Health Organization in India.
