2016–17 NC State Wolfpack Men's Basketball Team
The 2016–17 NC State Wolfpack men's basketball team represented North Carolina State University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Wolfpack, led by sixth-year head coach Mark Gottfried, played its home games at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina and were members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). They finished the season 15–17, 4-14 in ACC play to finish in a tie for 13th place. They lost in the first round of the ACC tournament to Clemson. On February 16, 2017, head coach Mark Gottfried was fired, but the school allowed him to finish out the season. He finished at NC State with a six-year record of 123–86. Mark Gottfried
Mark Frederick Gottfried (born January 20, 1964) is an American men's college basketball coach and former player who most recently served as head coach of the Cal State Northridge Matadors Gottfried played one season at Oral Roberts and three seasons at Alabama, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen in each of his seasons with the Crimson Tide. He spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at UCLA, including the team's 1995 NCAA championship season, three years as head coach at Murray State, eleven years as head coach at Alabama, and six seasons at North Carolina State. Early years Gottfried was born in Crestline, Ohio. He played varsity basketball at Carterville High School in Carterville, Illinois, and Carbondale High School in Carbondale, Illinois. Markell Davon Johnson (born August 25, 1998) is an American professional basketball player for BC Astana of the Kazakhstan Basketball Championship and the VTB United League. He played college basketball for the NC State Wolfpack. High school career Johnson played basketball for four years at East Technical High School in Cleveland, Ohio. As a freshman, he scored 27 points and made a game-winning jump shot with 3.1 seconds left against Lake High School to help his team reach its first state semifinal since 1972. Dennis Cliff Smith Jr. (born November 25, 1997) is an American professional basketball player for the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
