2015 Canning By-election
The 2015 Canning by-election was held for the Australian House of Representatives on Saturday 19 September from 8 am to 6 pm Western Standard Time, WST. The by-election in the seat of Division of Canning, Canning was triggered by the death of sitting Liberal Party of Australia, Liberal MP Don Randall (politician), Don Randall on 21 July 2015. Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tony Smith (Victorian politician), Tony Smith issued the Writ of election, writ for the by-election on 17 August 2015. Division Of Canning
The Division of Canning is an Australian Electoral Division in Western Australia. History The division was created in 1949 and is named for Alfred Canning, the Western Australian government surveyor who surveyed the Canning Stock Route. It was originally a country seat that traded hands between the two main centre-right parties, the Liberal and Country parties. Since 1980 it has been located in the southern suburbs of the two largest cities in Western Australia, Perth and Mandurah. For most of its last three decades, it has been a highly marginal seat due to the balanced proportion of the urban north and the rural south, changing hands between the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal Party. The September 11 attacks, commonly known as 9/11, were four coordinated suicide terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda against the United States on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Special Air Service Regiment
The Special Air Service Regiment, officially abbreviated SASR though commonly known as the SAS, is a special forces unit of the Australian Army. Formed in 1957, it was modelled on the British SAS sharing the motto, "Who Dares Wins". The regiment is based at Campbell Barracks, in Swanbourne, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, and is a direct command unit of the Special Operations Command. Animal Justice Party (AJP) is a political party in Australia founded in 2009. The party was registered by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) on 3 May 2011. Australian Defence Veterans Party
The Australian Defence Veterans Party (often shortened to Veterans Party) was a minor political party which formed in Australia in 2015 to advocate for military veterans. In November 2014, Senator Jacqui Lambie—then a member of the Palmer United Party, and an advocate for defence veterans and personnel, liked the proposed party's Facebook page, triggering an increase in membership enquiries and speculation that Lambie could join the ADVP, however she instead registered a separate party called the Jacqui Lambie Network on 14 May 2015. The party was registered with the Australian Electoral Commission on 15 June 2015. On 5 April 2014, an Australian Senate special election in Western Australia was held. The special election was held six months after the 2013 Australian federal election. The result of that 2013 election for the Australian Senate in Western Australia was voided on 20 February 2014 by the High Court of Australia, sitting as the Court of Disputed Returns, because 1,375 ballot papers were lost during an official recount in November 2013. The High Court ruled that because the number of lost ballots exceeded the margin for the two remaining Senate seats, the only acceptable remedy was to void the results and hold a special election. Following the election on 5 April, preferences were distributed on 29 April 2014 according to the group voting ticket voting system used at that time.
