2025 Alpine Skiing World Cup – Men's Giant Slalom
The men's giant slalom in the 2025 FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup consisted of nine events, including the final. The season opened in Sölden, Austria on 27 October 2024. Through the first four events of this season, the discipline had four different leaders; however, the last of that group, three-time defending champion Marco Odermatt of Switzerland, kept the lead after taking it and wrapped up the discipline title the week before finals. The season was interrupted for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2025, this time in Saalbach, Austria during 4–16 February 2025. The championship in men's giant slalom took place on Friday, 14 February, and was won in a huge upset by Raphael Haaser of Austria, who had never won a top-level race in his career (although he had previously won a silver and a bronze medal in the World Championships). Giant Slalom
Giant slalom (GS) is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding competitive discipline. It involves racing between sets of poles ("gates") spaced at a greater distance from each other than in Slalom skiing, slalom but less than in Super-G. Giant slalom and slalom make up the technical events in alpine ski racing. This category separates them from the speed events of Super-G and Downhill (ski competition), downhill. The technical events are normally composed of two runs, held on different courses on the same ski run. Course The vertical drop for a GS course must be for men, and for women. The number of gates in this event is 56–70 for men and 46–58 for women. The number of direction changes in a GS course equals 11–15% of the vertical drop of the course in metres, 13–18% for children. Lucas Pinheiro Braathen (; born 19April 2000) is a Norwegian-born Brazilian World Cup alpine ski racer. Until his retirement from World Cup racing inOctober 2023, he represented Norway in international competition. In March 2024, Braathen announced that he would return to ski racing, representing Brazil instead. Early life Braathen was born in Oslo to a Norwegian father and Brazilian mother on 19 April 2000. His parents separated when he was three years old and Braathen went to Brazil with his mother. Later in his childhood, he moved back to Norway to live with his father regularly visiting Brazil. Jan Ingemar Stenmark (; born 18 March 1956) is a Swedish former World Cup alpine ski racer. He is regarded as a legendary skier and one of the most prominent Swedish athletes ever, having won several Olympic medals and world cups during his career.
