2023–24 Indiana State Sycamores Men's Basketball Team
The 2023–24 Indiana State Sycamores men's basketball team represented Indiana State University during the 2023–24 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Sycamores, led by third-year head coach Josh Schertz, played their home games at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Indiana as members of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). The team finished the season 32–7, 17–3 in MVC play to win the regular-season championship. They defeated Missouri State and Northern Iowa before losing to Drake in the MVC tournament championship game. They received a bid to the National Invitation Tournament as a No. 1 seed. They defeated SMU, Minnesota, Cincinnati and Utah to advance to the NIT championship game. There they lost to Seton Hall. On February 12, 2024, the Sycamores were ranked in the AP poll for the first time since the 1978–79 season. Josh Schertz
Josh Schertz is an American basketball coach who is the currently the head coach at Saint Louis University. Coaching career Schertz's coaching career began as a student assistant with Florida Atlantic for the 1999–2000 season. He then moved on to Lynn, where he was an assistant for two seasons before a two-year assistant coaching stop at Queens University in North Carolina. In 2003, Schertz would follow Queens' head coach, Bart Lundy, to High Point, where he stayed until 2008 when he accepted the head coaching position at Lincoln Memorial. In his 13 years coaching, the Railsplitters posted 11-straight 20-win seasons, including four 30-win seasons, en route to 10 NCAA Division II men's basketball tournament appearances. Schertz was also named South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year a record seven times, while also having the highest overall winning percentage among all active NCAA head coaches at any level in a 10-year period. The 2023 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, popularly referred to as "Arch Madness", was a postseason men's basketball tournament that completed the 2022–23 season in the Missouri Valley Conference. The tournament was held at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri from March 2–5, 2023. For the first time, the tournament featured 12 teams. Belmont, Murray State, and UIC joined the conference in 2022 following Loyola Chicago's exit. The selection process for college basketball's NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments determine which teams (68 men's and 68 women's) will enter the tournaments (the centerpieces of the basketball championship frenzy known as "March Madness") and their seedings and matchups in the knockout bracket. Currently, thirty-one (31) teams gain automatic entry through winning their conference's championship. The remaining teams (37 men's, 37 women's) rely on the selection committee to award them an at-large bid in the tournament.
