2023–24 European Windstorm Season
The 2023–2024 European windstorm season was the ninth season of the European windstorm naming in Europe. It comprised a year, from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2024. This was the fifth season where the Netherlands participated (through Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, KNMI), alongside the United Kingdom's Met Office and Republic of Ireland, Ireland's Met Éireann in the western group. The Portuguese, Spanish, French and Belgian meteorological agencies collaborated for the seventh time, joined by Luxembourg's agency (Southwestern group). This was the third season where Greece, Israel and Cyprus (Eastern Mediterranean group), and Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Malta (Central Mediterranean group) named storms which affected their areas. 2022–23 European Windstorm Season
The 2022–23 European windstorm season was the deadliest and costliest European windstorm season on record, mainly because of the impact in northern Libya of Storm Daniel, which became the deadliest and costliest Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone, medicane ever recorded as well as the List of the deadliest tropical cyclones, deadliest tropical or subtropical system worldwide since Typhoon Haiyan, 2013. The 2022–23 season was the eighth instance of the European windstorm naming in Europe. It comprised a year from 1 September to 31 August, except in the Eastern Mediterranean Group which is shifted a month later and as such Storm Daniel was named on 4 September and lasted until 12 September, and Storm Elias existed two weeks later and overlapped with the Storm Agnes, first storm of the 2023–24 European windstorm season, succeeding season named by Greece. National Severe Weather Warning Service
The National Severe Weather Warning Service (shortened to NSWWS) is a service provided by the Met Office in the United Kingdom. The purpose of this service is to warn the public and emergency responders of severe or hazardous weather which has the potential to cause danger to life or widespread disruption. This allows emergency responders to put plans into place to help protect the public and also allowing the public to make necessary preparations. Types of warning Warnings are issued for severe weather which is expected to arrive in the next five days. Capel Curig
Capel Curig (; meaning " Curig's Chapel") is a village and community in Conwy County Borough, Wales. Historically in Caernarfonshire, it lies in the heart of Snowdonia, on the River Llugwy, and has a population of 226, reducing slightly to 206 at the 2011 census. 2024 United Kingdom Floods
In 2024, the United Kingdom experienced flooding. In early January, Storm Henk resulted in severe weather warnings and floods across the English Midlands. In April, flooding was widespread across England particularly on the south coast and the North East in the aftermath of Storm Kathleen and Storm Pierrick. In late November, there was widespread flooding as a result of Storm Bert. January Storm Henk brought damaging winds and persistent rain to parts of England and Wales on 2 January, prompting severe weather warnings to be issued across the country. Storm Babet (known as Storm Viktor in Germany) was an intense extratropical cyclone which affected large parts of northern and western Europe. The second named storm of the 2023–24 European windstorm season, Babet was named by the UK's Met Office on 16 October 2023. Impact Denmark On 20 October, parts of Denmark experienced water levels over two metres higher than usual, with a water level of measured in Aabenraa and Hesnæs, and many parts of Aabenraa had to be evacuated. In Sønderborg, the storm surge was the highest since 1904, with a water level of above normal, and was the highest since records began in 1892 at Gedser with a height of above normal. An Atlantic hurricane is a type of tropical cyclone that forms in the Atlantic Ocean primarily between June and November. Storm Ciarán, known in Germany as Storm Emir was a European windstorm that severely affected parts of Europe from late October to early November 2023. Part of the 2023–24 European windstorm season, Ciarán impacted northwestern Europe and killed 21 people, eleven of whom were in Italy and four in France. It also caused mass disruption to transport. Widespread damage from winds were reported in the Channel Islands, while 1.2 million French households were left without electricity.
