2023 Niuean General Election
General elections were held in Niue on 29 April 2023. The elections were originally planned to be held early, in late February or early March. Eight new MPs and six women were elected. Following the elections the Assembly elected Dalton Tagelagi as Premier. Electoral system The 20 members of the Niue Assembly, Assembly are elected by two methods; 14 are elected from single-member consistencies using first-past-the-post voting and six are elected from a single nationwide constituency by multiple non-transferable vote. There are currently no political parties. After the election, the Members of the Assembly elect a Speaker of the Assembly from outside parliament, and a Premier, who must be an MP. The Premier then chooses a Cabinet. In 2023, the candidate nomination fee was increased from NZ$11 to NZ$200. Niue Assembly
The Niue Assembly or Niue Parliament () is the legislature of Niue. It consists of 20 members; 14 representatives of the villages and 6 elected on a common island-wide roll. Members are directly elected by universal suffrage, and serve a three-year term. Niue follows the Westminster system of government, with the Premier elected by the Assembly and the Cabinet drawn from it. History The Assembly is descended from the Island Council established under the Cook Islands Act 1915. This was disbanded in 1959 and reconstituted as the Assembly, which was successively granted greater control. The Assembly assumed full law-making power within the constitution upon self-government in 1974. The Assembly is physically located in Alofi. Mark Blumsky
Mark Herbert Blumsky (born 29 August 1957) is a former New Zealand politician and diplomat. He was Mayor of Wellington from 1995 to 2001, and a Member of Parliament for the National Party from 2005 to 2008. Blumsky was New Zealand's High Commissioner to Niue from 2010 to 2014. Early life and family Blumsky was born in Nelson in 1957, the son of broadcaster and journalist John Blumsky, and educated at St Bede's College and Linwood College in Christchurch. Of Polish and Jewish origin, Blumsky started work at Hannah's Footwear Company in 1976 aged 17. He progressed from salesperson, to merchandise manager, to footwear buyer, to national sales manager. In 1989 he founded Mischief Shoes, which grew into a nationwide multimillion-dollar chain. In 1995 he left to enter politics. Namukulu
Namukulu is one of the fourteen List of villages in Niue, villages of Niue. With a population of 9 (2022 census), it is the smallest village on the island. It has an observation point located close to the Namukulu Cottages. The village was established in 1922 by people moving from Tuapa. It celebrated its centenary in 2022. Hikutavake
Hikutavake is one of the fourteen List of villages in Niue, villages of Niue. Its population at the 2022 census was 39, down from 45 in 2017. The village was established by villagers from Tuapa. Mutalau
Mutalau is one of the fourteen villages of Niue, and includes the northernmost point of the island. Its population at the 2022 census was 77, down from 98 in 2017. History Overview It was previously known as Ululauta and Matahefonua. ''Ululauta'' and ''Matahefonua'' both mean "head of the land". The name "Mutalau Ululauta Matahefonua" is adopted by the Mutalau people in Auckland, New Zealand as the name for their trust called the Mutalau Ululauta Matahefonua Trust (MUMT). Mutalau has a community hall called Salim Hall, named after the head of the UN Decolonisation Committee that came to Niue in the early 1970s to meet with Niueans and discuss the road map toward self-government. Liku, Niue
Liku is one of the fourteen villages of Niue, located close to the easternmost part of the island. It lies due east of the capital, Alofi, and its population at the 2022 census was 74. Geography Liku is connected to the capital by a road which traverses the centre of the island. It is also - along with Lakepa, six kilometres to the north and Hakupu, 10 kilometres to the south - one of three villages on the east coast road which connects Vaiea in the south with Mutalau on the north coast. Hakupu
Hakupu is one of the fourteen villages of the island of Niue. According to the 2022 census, it has a population of 180, making it the second-largest village in Niue. Geography It is located in the southeast of the island, close to Matatamane Point, and is connected by road with the capital Alofi (12 kilometres to the northwest), Avatele (7 kilometres to the west), and via the east coast road to Liku (12 kilometres), Lakepa (16 kilometres), and Mutalau (on the north coast, 20 kilometres away). Avatele
Avatele, formerly known as Oneonepata Matavaihala, is one of the fourteen villages of Niue, located on the southwest coast, with a population of 128 residents as of 2022. Geography Avatele Beach, the village's main sea track, stretches along the coast of Avatele Bay and is the largest and most well-known beach on the island. Although the sand is mostly of the coarse kind it is an important swimming and picnic site for both tourists and residents.
