2022–23 BYU Cougars Men's Basketball Team
The 2022–23 BYU Cougars men's basketball team represented Brigham Young University during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. In head coach Mark Pope's fourth season as BYU's head coach and the Cougars 12th and final season as members of the West Coast Conference (WCC) as they will begin as members of the Big 12 Conference in the 2023–24 season. The Cougars played their home games at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah. Previous season The Cougars finished the 2021–22 season 24–11, 9–6 in WCC play to finish in fifth place. In the WCC tournament, they defeated Loyola Marymount in the second round before losing to San Francisco in the quarterfinals. Mark Pope
Mark Edward Pope (born September 11, 1972) is an American collegiate basketball coach and former player who is head men's basketball coach at the University of Kentucky, his alma matter. As a player, Pope played power forward and small forward. He was Pac-10 Freshman of the Year with the Washington Huskies and then transferred to Kentucky, where he served as a team captain of its 1996 NCAA national championship team. After college, Pope spent almost a decade playing professionally in the U.S. and internationally. Pope has held various coaching roles at the collegiate level. Prior to taking the helm at his alma mater, he was the head coach at Utah Valley from 2015 to 2019 and BYU from 2019 to 2024. 2021–22 Long Beach State Beach Men's Basketball Team
The 2021–22 Long Beach State Beach men's basketball team represented California State University, Long Beach in the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Beach were led by 15th-year head coach Dan Monson and played their home games at the Walter Pyramid as members of the Big West Conference. They finished the regular season 20–12, 12–3 in Big West play to win the regular season championship, the school's first since 2013 and fourth overall under Monson. They defeated Cal State Bakersfield and UC Santa Barbara to advance to the championship game of the Big West tournament where they lost to Cal State Fullerton. Gavin Baxter
Gavin B. Baxter (born October 16, 1997) is an American former basketball player. He played college basketball for the BYU Cougars and the Utah Utes. Listed at 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m) and 225 pounds (103 kg), he plays the small forward position. High school career Baxter attended Timpview High School, where he was rated a four-star recruit and was ranked among the top 5 recruits in Utah. Te'Jon Lucas
Te'Jon Lucas (born October 10, 1998) is an American basketball player who currently plays for the Bristol Flyers of the British Basketball League. He played college basketball for the Illinois Fighting Illini, the Milwaukee Panthers, and the BYU Cougars. High school career Lucas attended Washington High School of Information Technology in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As a junior, he averaged 14.3 points and 5.2 assists per game, earning Second Team All-Conference honors. Alexander Barcello (born August 31, 1998) is an American professional basketball player for Filou Oostende of the BNXT League. He played college basketball for the BYU Cougars of the West Coast Conference (WCC) and for the Arizona Wildcats. David Wayne Rice (born August 29, 1968) is an American college basketball coach for Salt Lake Community College. Mark Ellsworth Madsen (born January 28, 1976) is an American basketball coach and former NBA player who is the head coach of the California Golden Bears of the ACC.
